Hi all. first of all I am inexperianced, only had my mac 26m for a year now and have only took it on local lakes. I am a poor man but am living my dream of having a sail boat. I realize that I can't aford a sailboat(except for a mac). I got mine new. I have heard all about how other boats are better than the mac but I will never be able to aford anything else. My question is how much will I be able to do with it, or what is the best I can hope for? How far out can I sail if I get to take it to the atlantic? Is it livable when I retire or is it just for weekend cruises? please if you hate the mac's in general then don't discourage me, but if you own one can I get some realistic expectations. Any info will be greatly appriciated. My email address is sparring@bellsouth.net sincerly shawn

experience will determine your journey

just like learning how to drive, you dont start off by driving on i95 during rush hour. the macgregors are truly the volkswagons of sailboats (imho), they can do amazing things with the proper skill level. go slow, read and learn. try crewing for a race boat, to learn more about sailing. theres a bunch of guys that go to bahamas, and way off shore. http://conchcruisers.net/ also look at these mods: www.macgregor-boats.com theres no reason you cant do anything you can on a 'big boat' in a mac, if youre prepared. and some do live on the mac's... -also look at the Macgregor Sailors page.... more x's and m's I think...

don't be

don't be ashamed of owning a MAC. Be like being ashamed of having a good wife that does everything very nicly and comfortable to live with rather than having a high priced #*&@% that you can't afford because all she wants is more $$$$$. Be proud because you have the best. You will enjoy sailing a Mac as much as any other hi priced #$@&%#.

My favorite place to sail to for a few days is The Chandeleur Is. I have my own ramp and pier, so I don't have any experience with the public launch ramps, but they're supposed to be building a new one in Biloxi. I think there is a good ramp at Pascagoula

Mac is a nice boat

Shawn, boats are like cars, women, books and whatever else makes you happy. Mac's are just fine so don't feel inferior because you own one. I love mine, it just got too small as I got larger and older. Remember every boat is a compromise of somekind. I'd suggest sailing with some more advanced sailors, maybe a lot older who love to sail. There are boat "owners" and "sailors", spend some time getting comfortable with the boat, single hand and with friends. You can spend a day or a week on her, it's up to you. For the out to the Atlantic thing, be careful, get a good VHF for weather and listen to it. Watch the sea reports and don't go too far. Remember to leave plenty of time to get out of rough weather if it surprizes you. Learn about sea anchors and flares. Remember that VhF? Use a lifejacket and remember if things get rough to furl before you need to, if you wait it'll be harder and more dangerous. Keep the hatchboard(s) in if it gets rough too. You don't want water in this boat or any boat. Take your time and good luck. Steve

Mac 26

Dear Shawn Mac 26 X, like M, is the best boat, considering the use and value. If you search the web for Mc owners, you will see that poor and rich people make this choice, just because there is only one boat with these skills. See how many friends you have in USA! See also http://www.macgregor-boats.com/ ·You can go everywhere: Shallow waters, rivers, and sea. Others cant. ·Is trailorable. This is huge advantage. I move it with a Toyota corolla 1,6 ·It is fast, like a speedboat. When there is no or little wind, others go with 6 mph and I go with 14. ·Under sail, it is the best solution for amateurs. ·I go every year 15-20 days of holidays, 4 people, live in, without problems. When I do not need it, it rests on the trailer, waiting for the summer. Others cant. ·If you can do some improvements by do it yourself, (see what others do) you will have a very comfortable boat and the pleasure that you spend nice time doing it. Believe me, after all, it is a very good toy. And I had a lot…….. Kind regards George

;D thanks all

thanks all for the good advice and encouragement. i like the idea of the mac being the vw of sail boats "since i wanted one when i was younger". I am sure i will enjoy my mac and get the most out of her. Hopefully I can get together with some of the groups that take those trips and go next year.
