We have a 1984 MacGregor 25 (currently with no motor) and after reading some other posts, are pretty sure what we want as far as horse power. But we haven't discussing shaft lengths on the motors. Assuming our motor bracket is mounted similar to other 25's, we'd appreciate hearing what shaft lengths are working for others. On our local lake, when the ski boats have worked up a pretty good chop, the trolling motor we occasionally use will try coming out of the water with the waves. This trolling motor measures 24 inches from the center of the prop to the top of what would be a motor bracket or transom (by the way, is that the correct way to measure shaft length?). Our concern in choosing a motor is that future trips to larger lakes or maybe the San Francisco Bay would yield even more problems with the prop coming out of the water. Thanks in advance for any input. You all have been great with the other questions we've had so far!

too short

Shaft length is measured from the top of the transom to the cavitation plate above the prop. Some members are getting the 25" shafts for piece of mind. I get by with a 20" on the lake in my 26S

I use a 25" in the Gulf of Mexico and would definitely recommend it for San Fran Bay

I have a 6hp Johnson Sailmaster(vintage 198?) and measuring the shaft as you did I come up with 28". If I go to the top of the cavitation plate its 23". It does very well in the swells and chop on lake Michigan, and it does get choppy especially entering and leaing the harbors out there.

pricing

Is there a good way to determine how much to pay for a used motor? There should be a better way than just having the highest bid on Ebay. It would help readers looking to buy one, but it would also help me figure out how to price mine. I want to sell my 5hp Nissan locally and not have to worry about crating, shipping etc.
