For those of you who have outboard motors and use them in salt water, I have a question. How often do you flush the cooling system out with fresh water. I have been doing it every time I use my Johnson 8 h.p. 2 stroke, which is about every week. But it is a hassle. Every other use would be much more convenient, but I dojn't want to plug up the cooling system. What is your experience? David King, "Molly"

once a year

whether it needs it or not... Actually, the only time most folks I know bother to flush it is at the end of our boating season.

Hi David, I do the same as Landsend...

flush with fresh water after each cruise. Terry

First thing upon return of a trip.

During a trip will let the salt dry in the motor from one day to the next. Hopefully the salt that dried yesterday will be flushed by today's salt water and so on and so forth until at the end it will be flushed by fresh water. Been doing it for years and only once did I have a problem; the pee-hole got blocked impeding circulation and causing mild overheating in the powerhead. A piece of wire inserted through the pee-hole saved the day.

As we often say in these parts;

It depends. I can't speak for your Johnson but my 18 year old Yamaha has even been put away wet (saltwater inside) during the off season.(third world storage) After a recent inspection it still has no sign of corrosion.

Thanks for your replies. I'll probably go back to flushing after every use. I had one engine, a Honda 8, 4 stroke,that plugged up because I was lazy and didn't flush it out, sometimes for weeks. As important as flushing is, I'm surprised and disappointed that engine manufacturers don't make the flushing process easier. To the pèrson who told me what the purpose of flushng was, next time,please read the question. David King, "Molly"
