Hello Members,
(1) CB will not fully retract on 1979 Oday 30. Entire "leading edge" of the board sticks out about 6 inches when the pennant is fully pulled up. Creates extra 1/2 foot of draft which is not helpful here in SW FL.

Cleaned trunk and visually inspected for obstructions while the boat was hauled out...none visible. Adjusted lines that control CB... no improvement. Replaced the "tang" (piece of metal in the CB that the pennant attaches to). The metal piece jams about midway along the slot in the aft edge of the CB as it pivots when the line & CB are pulled up. I changed that metal piece last spring, but do not know whether the one I removed was the original length.

Does anyone know the correct length that metal piece should be? I have been wondering whether lengthening it would be helpful because it would change the angle of the pull on the board toward the hole up through the hull. I plan to attempt that change the next time I clean the bottom.
Thanks, Phil pccist@yahoo.com

I have a 1979 32 with probably the exact same keel trunk and my experience is to have the smallest thimble securing the cable at the top of the board and a small shackle
Here's a picture try zooming in for a better look

CB trouble

Thanks for your response. I have no CB cable, just a line to a small shackle attached to the centerboard "tang". I'll try a different knot instead of the bowline that is there now.
Do you know how long the metal tang in the CB is? Mine sticks only about one inch out of the CB's slot.
Thanks, Phil pccist@yahoo.com

Also, does your CB slide up as well as pivot? When fully up is it totally within the trunk?
Thanks, Phil

Yes its flush when parked,it pivots on a piece of delrin plastic thats about 2 inch in diameter and I don't have a tang but a reinforced hole through the board at the edge and you mentioned you have a bowline so I'm thinking someone added the tang and between that and your knot there's restriction when it reaches the centerboard cable tube....you do have a tube at the top of the keel trunk?

Attached are the CB design spec for my '78 ODay. I replaced my cable/rope line this spring ('10). The cable was fine, the spliced-in rope was rotting on the deck. Pictures are included. I put a small ss shackle from the 2 tangs in CB to the cable loop. Make sure when up the CB aligns with the trunk cable hole. The CB has a 2" Pin that sits on 2 fiberglass wedges. The wedges are held in place by bottom plates screwed into the keel.
I got the CB boat specs from "Rudy" at D&R Marine.
Mine is a fresh water boat and has a real clean CB and trunk. I picked up the boat this yr.

Hello seaguhl,
Thanks for the response with the pictures and the drawing!
I removed Paloma's CB yesterday and will work on matching its attachment to the drawing. Notably, our CB did not have the wedges in place any longer, the pennant was all line (which may have created the jamming if the knot became stuck in the lower end of the tube through the hull), and the tang in the board is shorter and probably does not pivot as far as your drawing and pictures show.
The plates across the lower end of the channels in which the CB pivot fits were held in place by ss machine screws. I was glad they were still removable.
Thanks again for the detailed help you provided.
