I repacked my stuffing box this spring. When my 28.5 was launched today It was leaking quite a bit. I put 4 rings of packing in originally. The yard pulled it right out and I got anoter ring in. It is still leaking. Do you think the packing will swell enough to slow the leak?

The packing should be 3/16" and there should be a nylon washer in there too.

Normally you cannot get that many rings in the box so I would be suspect that something else is going on.

Packing size

Sounds like you have the wrong size packing. When I had the nylon stuffing box on my 28.5, it took three rings of 1/4" packing. I have since switched to a bronze stuffing box and use 1/4"teflon impregnated flax packing , which is almost completely dripless.

Here is what my OEM white nylon stuffing box looked like on my '86 H28.5 before I replaced it with a conventional bronze gland. If you gland is packed with the right size packing material, and the compression washers are in place, the my guess is that your shaft may be scored which would prevent the gland from making a correct seal.

The box is leaking quite a bit. I am going to try to put some 1/4" packing while still in the water. Wish me luck!

Whay would you want a brass/bronze stuffing box? They just corrode and can be a sob to seperate.

Did you offset the rings? Did you cut the stuffing at 45 deg. angles?
