We have sailed to NYC from Baltimore and plan an overnight trip on Weds to visit with family there and do our wash and have a good shower. We are staying in the 79th St Marina off Manhattan. That is another story, for a different post, but I will say the negative reports while perhaps a touch over drawn are not completely wrong. By the way thanks to all for the help on planning this trip the information was great and it has been a wonderful trip.
I grew up here but it has been at 40 and perhaps closer to 50 years ago that I have had a boat under my control here. Much I remembered was still true but it is an aging memory with the glow of childhood.
So I am seeking guidance on how to use the tides to best advantage for the trip. We already know we can not leave the dock here until the tide turns or is about to. Accient experience with the Hudson has been reconfirmed the current is so strong docking a 70's Hunter with its prop walk in an unfamiliar marina is a nightmare and getting off without slamming into a piling or other boat's here won't be easy if the tide is coming up river so we know we need to leave here near slack water or as slack as the Hudosn every really gets.
The real question is how to choose when to exit East River via Hell Gate to the Sound we are assuming we want to try and do it as near slack water as possible or at least on the falling tide. Any thoughts on best way to do this? All help appreciated.
