Hi all, Planning a same day round-trip from Long Island Sound down to the Statue of Liberty and back this coming weekend. River tides are in pretty good timing for a one day turnaround this weekend, weather permitting. Anyhow, may need to either drop off or pick up crew members somewhere along the river front(s) of lower Manhattan while sailing around the harbor. Any suggestions where there may be an easily accessable dock, preferrably floating, that would allow for a quick drop off or pickup of crew? Financial Plaza Marina maybe? Jersey options welcome too... Thanks all..... Fair Winds, Jim "Sojourn"

Access?

Is a place like financial plaza open and available for a few minutes to do the load/unload at no cost and without any grins???

You are not really supposed to use the

Financial Center for drop off's....especially mid season. You might get away with it, but it would be better very early in the am or late at night. I did a quick stop over there mid week in April one year and they told me they really weren't supposed to let me (everybody and their brother would be doing it). But since it was out of season and a quite day he let me tie up for a short time. An alternative might be the marina in NJ right across the way. I believe its called the Liberty State Marina in Jersey city? There are two over there. Its very easy to see the entrance just go towards the big Colgate Clock and its the channel just south of that. The marina on the north side of the channel is where I wintered my boat. I know they have a Gas dock and inexpensive restaurant now (and in the evening a nightclub) I pretty sure you can pick up someone there.

Other options

On the Hudson above the World Financial Center is an area with several moored somewhat beatup yachts and a landing. I should think you could make a pickup and dropoff there. The area on the Jersey side near the Colgate Clock is very public and should be no trouble. There is also the 23rd St. Marina on the East River. It's city owned. And of course way uptown is the 79th Street marina, also city owned.

Quickies Only

I've only done quick pickups and dropoffs there. Never tied up and hung around. But it was never a problem. You just have to make sure you don't get run over by one of the megayachts that might be there.

Thanks Much for the tips....

Thank you all for the tips on NYC pick-ups/drop-offs. Maybe one 40 foot floating dock with a $5.00 "quickie" charge would be a good little business somewhere down around the battery. Then everyone could do it!! :) Fair Winds, Jim

Tides and Currents

How do you time the tides and currents to get from the sound to the battery? I am planning a LI Sound cruise next year and havn't figured that out yet. I would be coming from the harbor, up the East River to the sound and then return a week later. Thanks

Paul, I've done it a few times

And like the post before I figured it out from the Eldridge book, its the yellow one at your Marine store (it has current flow and rates in a chart form for every hour from ebb and flow throughout the NY City waterways...worth every penny). I don't have my Log book (its on my boat), but if I did, I could tell you the best time (relative to time of mean high tide at the Battery) to be approaching the Verrezano- Narrows and which would tell you the time you should be at The Battery and what time you should then be arriving at Hells Gate. Try emailing me off list and I can get you the info next week after I get to the boat. (ps....it works so well I usually end up motoring just north of Hells Gate at 11 knots on the GPS...in a 27 foot boat!)

East River Tides and Currents

Eldridge has all the information you need. My understanding the best bet is to catch the East River Northbound at low water slack, and start up from the Battery such that when the flood begins it helps you up the river and through Hellgate and surrounds. Southbound, you catch it at slack at High Tide/Flood and have the current help you down the river to the battery and beyond. Did it once with a 25 footer with a 9 horsepower outboard... We really flew...:) But, also, care is needed as there is a lot of traffic and flotsam to be avoided as well as fluky currents and swells to be managed. Fair Winds, Jim

Thanks. I am at vze24yfj@verizon.net. Thanks for your help. I have a O'Day 23 with a 15 hp on her. Another boat will be going and she is a 23' with a 7.5 hp.
