I was out in the marsh today in my kayak. This feral hog came out of the brush in front of me. Biggest hog I have ever seen, domestic or wild. I see quite a few of them, but never anything even close to this big. There isn't much for a size referance, but this thing was just about Shetland pony size.

Don't know

I don't know about one this size. Probably tougher than an old boot. But I have eaten smaller ones, and they are absolutely delicious. Much better than farm raised pork. Did you notice the size of the testicles on this guy.

My nephew

I have a nephew who lives about 50 miles south of Dallas. He hunts them with a pistol, off a 4 wheeler. Ever time I go up that way, always have wild hog. Cooked on a smoker, and they are delicious.

Buggers get viscous when cornered.. ya have to give them some room.. I am surprised to see that one so close to you in a moving boat. They are a pest for farmers and most are glad to have someone haul a couple off.

Sitting

I had my kayak backed up on the bank and was quiet and still. When I saw that big sucker, I thought I could paddle faster than he could swim.

Becoming a real problem in Texas. Many ranchers have adopted a "shoot on sight" attitude. When a herd comes through, they can totally destroy a field.

That's probably the biggest I've ever seen though.

Oh, and Sailaway- an old boot would probably be better eating than that old boar. More tender anyway.

Texas

Around my nephews area S. of Dallas, most land is open for hog hunters, even if for nothing else. Nephew says it is good sport hunting them with a pistol. ( 44 mag. ) And he hunts off a 4 wheeler.

S. Texas too

They are very common in S.Texas too. But a 100 pounder is a big javelina. We don't have them here, but lots of feral hogs.

I divorced a woman down that way one time. The family package kinda threw me off at first, but in retrospect....yep, that may be the one..

Feral Pigs are also quite common along the AICW in Georgia ... BIG ones !!!!

There's an island in the Exumas Chain in the Bahamas (Big Majors Cay) thats totally populated by pigs. Theyll sometimes swim out to 'greet' you and your dinghy - looking for food handouts. Boaters feeding these pigs has been a long established 'institution'. These pigs have been on this island for many many years; but, remain non-feral looking and just a wee bit aggressive - probably due to the constant human contact.

Pig roast

Here in Wisconsin it's said they are starting to be a problem. Only a small game license is needed and no bag limit.
If a farmer's having trouble they'll usually let you set up. More than once if you share what you shoot.
Up north there are rumours that they're some Russian cross breeds that can survive the winter and are getting very large. Don't know as I haven't personally seen one. But there is the video "Pig Bomb" on Youtube and elsewhere that talks about it.

Used to hunt them when I lived in Kentucky, too. Yearling to two years old are a good size and cook well. The big ones aren't bad if you pit roast them for a day or two. Even better if someone knows what they're doing and can do a Hawaiian style pit where they bury it to cook.

Dang... My mouth's watering and it IS hunting season!

yes they are all along the Savannah river back in the mid 70's...we always like to shoot the 80 to 100 pounders i used to hunt them when down at the river shack on the river bank about 30 miles down stream from Augusta would shoot them dress them and cook um and drink Crown Royal waiting on them to get done...as they say those were the days..

I have a picture here on my desk of a 572 pound Boar that we shot south of Kermenshah, Iran back in 1976. A lot of his cousins live north of the border in Russia. He was good eating. Although the locals would have nothing to do with them they were happy when we shot them. We hunted wild boar up on the Caspian Sea in Northern Iran with spot lights.
