76 Oday 25 One other thing.....there is no capped sleeve on the bow to allow anchor rode to be stowed beneath in the front compartment of V-berth. How have other owners of 25's remedied this? One friend suggested using a cowl vent to allow rode thru and also allows cabin ventilation when necessary and a screw cap when moored. Something must be done, as 100 ft of rode can't be stored on the fore deck. Thanks for your thoughts.....Gary

Chain Locker
Gary, there was some discussion awhile back on a chain locker for the O'Day25. It's in the archive if you want to see it. I have one aboard my 25, and it was probably built by the previous owner. Basically it consists of a hawse pipe with a hinged lid (available at most chandleries) that directs the chain/rope down into a chain locker built at the head of the V berth, from V berth roof down to the V berth deck. This is an area that tends to be wasted space (unless your over 6.5' tall, then your toes fit into the V) so suits this space. The locker is waterproofed on the inside plywood bottom and front inside plywood face with fiberglass and resin, but could be epoxied also. The front face plate and bottom is screwed onto 1"X2"stringers that are glued to the hull, and the face plate screws into the stringers. There are 2 3/8" holes drilled (epoxy coated) through the hull at the base of the locker down on an angle that lead any water that accumulates there out of the locker and overboard. It has been completely trouble free and extremely handy. I have 150 feet of 1/2 rope and 20' of chain and the locker takes it all easily. Don

How can I manage without a chain locker???
New owner of 76 O'Day 25 I posted a message the other day regarding the lack of a chain locker and got some good responses, thanks. Hey Don....I am having trouble visualizing yours. If you get a chance, a picture would be great. Question....what would be the problem with NOT building a sealed locker with a thru hull for drainage. Just install a hawse pipe or cowl vent in the deck and allow the rode to feed into the existing little space at the point of the V berth. Mine has a laminated teak panel with a hole cut in the center for storage (pretty sure it's all factory). It seems that any water that made its way in would drain down and into the bilge. Would a little saltwater in the bilge harm anything? Please tell me if I'm way off here. Thanks

Gary, the area you describe, at the head of the V-berth is the area that I was describing that has been turned into a chain locker. The teak panel with the hole you describe was replaced by a solid taek panel that screwed into place, but is still removeable, to clean and inspect the locker periodically. The inside area of the locker may have been enlarged by the previous owner. The inside area was fiberglassed and resined to waterproof, and the 2 holes drilled to drain it. There would not be a lot of water come aboard when storing the rhode, I agree, probably less than a half a tea cup. I'd say give it a go. You can always seal the area off later if you want. I will try soon for some pix, but we just had a foot of snow fall this week and the tarps stay on, and it's dark inside. Don
