Has anyone seen this storm that hit Corsica a few weeks ago:

If I saw a wind driven wall of water coming like that I don’t think worrying about my phone orientation would be a priority. :yikes:

Six people died. Winds over 100 knots drove boats ashore with dragging anchors and parted lines. This video gives an impression:

From what I've been reading, The Med has been experiencing cyclonic storms much akin to hurricanes, for the first time in modern times. I gather this is just the beginning.

There is lengthy discussion on French sailing sites about the definition of different weather phenomenon. Most seem to call this Corsican event a rapidly-developing and very strong thunderstorm. The French weather service - France Météo - saw it developing, but could not get the responsible government representatives that they needed to issue an alert together before it was upon them. A medicane would cover a much broader area, would not likely move as quickly, would be easier to see coming, and not be over in an hour.

I call BS.

In the story I linked to in the weather sub, France Meteo said they knew about the possible storm but most of the models showed that it would miss Corsica, so they didn't warn earlier. By the time they knew it would hit Corsica they simply had a warning it was imminent.

You try getting three levels of the French government (Federal, Regional and Departmental) together in eight minutes, when the storm is going to hit in ten. They missed this one.

I don't know of any Weather alerts that require 3 levels of government before sending out the info.

Even private weather websites send out info and alerts. Environment Canada, US National Weather Service, UK Met Office, Yr Norway, etc. don't need another department babysitting to do their job.

I doubt that France Meteo is unable to send out weather alerts without consultation.

Without a France Meteo official source link that says otherwise.. I still call BS.

The only official statement I have read is that the majority of the models forecasted the storm not making landfall in Corsica. (the specific story above says 1 model reportedly did). In avoiding sending out, what they initially felt was likely a false alert, they unfortunately waited until it was definitely going to hit land.
