Speaking of batteries, pics of couple of our battery cabinets in our U.P.S. room "B". Each cabinet has 40 batteries inside. This room has 4 battery modules = 160 batteries. these are about 5" taller longer and wider. We have another room with 240 batteries in 6 battery module cabs. We just replaced these yesterday, Big Blue specs reccomended life cycle is 4 years. 105lbs each.....We have 8 in a charging rack, for replacements if a string goes bad....I have one for a cranking battery, they are not made for a house bank that continously cycles and recharges.... We have a similar setup in our server room. Not quite as big but could support a decent sized data center if needed. Kind of silly considering our generator kicks in within 10 seconds and can be refilled while running giving us virtually limitless power in the event of an outage.

we have 2- 800 kw cat diesels, 18 ATS,s -2 UPS rooms, the IT boys love the word redundent...As the engineer lots of high tech toys.....as long as it works when needed otherwise I will have to disappear....Red

Those UPS's are ok until they're not. One of ours was being serviced a few months ago and the fail over failed catastrophically. Apparently something was put in backwards. Generators thought the UPS was working but it wasn't and we had a nice up, down, up, down power stutter that hosed a couple of the learning management system servers. It was the new Director of Enterprise Computing's first day on the job.

They had another service/test today and things went much better. As in nothing broke.

just got back from helping a friend of mine install 128 modules in a military UPS battery backup system...all the while working with two armed navy guards standing over us holding loaded M 16's and three civilian personnel ...to say the least it was a very intense day......
