....... I am curious as to how people handle such a moronicaly simple thing as storing sails in their sail bags. Do you neatly flake them and fold them up or just randomly stuff them in the bag ? My concern is which method has the least severe creasing effect on the material. I can't take much more of this winter thing ...... got to get back on the water. Reagrds, s/v Island Hunter

Fold or Roll

Ralph: There was a thread on this subject in the past couple of months. Check out the archives for this subject. If you watch what the pros do, they always fold their sails.

Sail Care

We are brand new sailors, we just bought our '77 Hunter 25 two weeks ago, but everytime that we have gone out sailing we flake both sails when we return. They seem to take up a lot less room on our little boat that way. It also seems that it puts a lot less wrinkles too. Steve Hall S/V Helen Highwater

Flake or roll...maybe hang

I am a devotee of flaking then rolling to put them in the bags. Steve is right about folding and I don't think there's a big harm in that. If you are stowing the sails for the winter, do you have a place where you can hang the sails unfolded and/or unrolled? Down here in Southeast Texas we don't have to "winterize" so our sails are used pretty much year 'round. But, maybe you have a garage or something where you can put up hooks on either end and hang them up that way. We do that with the club racers at the yacht club and works very well.
