Now "cruising" in the sun! (yippee!)

I have had an exciting time trying out anchoring and pole- ing out the foresail, and tacking and gybing and goodness knows what else! I am now in a marina in Portosin, Ria Muros, Spain - I shall write up my escapades as soon as I get a decent wifi signal. Some pics here...

TalkTalk Webspace is closing soon!!

Still having trouble with the engine and I seem to have sprung a leak from somewhere as well but it all seems less frightening in the sun with light breezes and a clear sky!

Problems various!

Engine - I think I have set up the combi wrong. It goes very fast (7kts) but the engine smokes (black) a bit and it is obviously working hard. I am guessing that the prop is too coarse? I have had a look at the control lever setup (teleflex thing?) and there is some adjustment so I was thinking of reducing the length of the control rod so that at any given tgrottle setting the prop pitch will be a bit less than it currently is..... ie a bit like changing down a gear? (or half a gear anyway)
Does this make sense? John K - did you say you did something similar?

Salt Water Leak - I have developed a small leak that appears from under the sink area just underneath the water pumps. It is only really apparent when motoring - I have checked the obvious (the bits I can see) pipes and connections but I cannot find the source of the leak. Anyone had anything similar?

Stopping the genoa blocks from moving on their track - mine have a little knurled screw that is supposed to keep the sheet block in place but they do not work. Is there a simple fix?

Any advice most welcome...

Someone once told me that cruising is just fixing your boat in sunny places... they are so right!

ps I saved 5 lives yesterday - tiny rowing boat blew out to sea with a Spannish family on board (mum dad and three little kids) - I had to take them back to shore - his rowlocks were broken and they were awash in the waves - kids screaming and wife hugged me to death when I put her on the dockside! The hubby said he will come to Portosin tomorrow and buy me a beer. I was hoping he was the king of Spain's son and would give me my choice of a dozen dusky maiden's from Galicia! Now I know why all sailors are gay - not much female company for a lone sailor / cabin boy!Cabin Boy John

Hi John.
No joy on combi setup I'm afraid - mine was set up by a mechanic.
7 kts sounds remarkable. Well above the hull speed. Maybe your log is reading fast like some car speedometers?

Re moving genoa cars on track I just put small turning blocks forward of the tracks and ran light 2-3mm lines from car forward to block and aft to horn cleats.
This allows me to move car forward when off wind.
The cars move aft under load when going to windward so I didn't bother setting up a "backhaul".
Hope that helps.

Have you tried closing seacock for salt w pump? Maybe pump is leaking?

Congrats on rescue and good luck with local maidens. :)

John,
Good on you for saving that family! What an adventure you're having!!

On the genoa track: you can drill small dimples in the track between the fastening bolts so that the locking screw won't slide. Or, if the fastening bolt heads are recessed a bit, just wind the locking screw down on top of the bolt head ... same result.

On the Origo: make sure you put the little round rubber covers over the burners (when cooled off) to stop the alcohol from eveaporating. I've found this very effective. If you don't have covers, make a couple from something handy. You could even use those coasters from under the beer glasses you get in a pub.

Wish I could help on the Combi, but I don't have one on my Vega ... thank goodness!

Thanks peter, i have done what you said and hopefully the block will
stay where i put it - seems much more solid anyway. The origo tip is
a good one - I had a look and found two round black pieces of rubber
under the meths containers so i guess that is what they are for!
I have adjusted the control linkage so that I get a bit less prop
movement with the same throttle setting. It seems better tied up so I
shall try it at sea tomorrow. Hopefully that will be the cure.

The water leak is a bit of a mystery... It happens when motoring and
I have noticed that the stern digs in a bit under power and that the
cockpit drains let water into the "gutters" on either side of the
cockpit floor. I have lost a couple of the rubber "nuts" that the
floor screws to so i think water is getting into the engine
compartment there and then running down to exit by the water
pumps.... I will try and seal the floor a bit tighter and see what
happens!

I am getting to know this boat quite well now. It is an amazing thing
and much faster than I thought it would be... I have been following a
new Pacific Seacraft (24ft?) and I have to reef down to stay behind
it! The guy in the Seacraft is not amused and keeps saying how the
hell do I go so fast! Anyway - time to bring in my washing and make
myself something to eat.

Hi John.
water getting in under the aft end of the cockpit sole will end in the bilge!

I speak from experience on this at least.

I've just installed a leccy auto bilge pump (Rule 500 gph) - I think you did too?

Did yours keep the bilge dry?

All the best
John

Yes - I think you are right.... I have an auto bilge pump - it works
a treat but I usually give the manual one a few pumps every day so it
does not get much work. In fact VERY little water has got in the keel
since Biscay - mainly the overflow from when I fill the water tank.

Foggy here now... worst summer in living memory apparently !

Hope you are well John - it seems like ages since we met and had fish
and chips in Kinsale!I will not go out if fog is forecast so I may be here for a while.
The cruising lark is slow!!!! Hope you are well and getting some
good weather.
take care

John
