I am about to purchase my first sailboat and have been looking at the Oday models. I have plans to sail along the coastal area of my home port, varied distances of about 15 miles out or so. Would the 20ft model be adequate for this type of sailing?
Welcome to the wonderful world of sailing! I have had my O'Day 22 for 29 years. The last 21 years have been here in Maine. It's been a great boat for day sailing and "small time" cruising for two (friends!). For many years my wife, myself and two young boys would spend a week at a time on the boat...Worked out fine. just to let you know, i bought an o'day 19, 2 years ago , my first sailboat. i have sailed it on the long island sound and currently sail on the south shore of long island, great south bay.i find the 19 to be a reliable and safe boat,but i dont think i would be coastal cruising out 15 miles or so from land. not that i dont think the boat could handle it, i just would not want to be that far from port should you be caught in blow in a small craft mike
If you do plan on excursions of 15 miles from shore you may be better off with something larger. Mike is right, the 20 will probably handle the trip, but not comfortably. For about the same price, you can pick up a nice Oday 22. Amazing what 2 feet does to a boat in terms of room and sea-worthyness. My Oday 20' weekender is all I can ask for in the confines of Narragansett Bay, the shores of Westport and New Bedford, Mass. Lots of shore hugging but lots of fun as well.
