Another solution is to get yourself a storm jib.

Yes, you can reef a headsail. If you don't have roller furling you can add reef points to your hanked on genoa/jib just like on the main.

My friend has a jib with reef points. He bunches up the bottom (actually I think he rolls it)and ties it, and has a cable to go from the reef to the stem. The upper part of the sail stays where it normally is. I'm not sure if that is the best way, but it does work pretty effectively.

Jerry you are right, it's not the best way. Your friend would be better off if he moved the sail lower on the headstay instead. The reefed tack should come down to the forestay tack fitting. That moves the CE of the sail lower and produces less heel and weather helm when the wind kicks up.
