HEY BOB!

WHAT ENGINE DO YOU HAVE? WHAT YEAR IS YOUR BOAT? WHAT TEMP IS IT RUNNING? WHY ARE WE YELLING?

Might be OK

You may not, or even probably do not, have a problem. For sure you don't if you have a 5411 Diesel if, as you say, you're not overheating. That particular engine installation, and maybe others as well, use a bypass circuit as part of the raw water cooling system. The hot water from the engine re-circulates from the thermostat housing to a "T" fitting at the raw water intake thru-hull, pre-heating the intake water to help bring the engine to operating temp. Only when the engine is up to operating temperature does the thermostat let more than just a trickle flow through the exhaust. The colder the ambient water temperature, the longer this takes. At best it still spits and surges instead of a steady flow which is is dramatically different from most boats which continuously put out a strong stream of water. I always have well-meaning, fellow boaters hail me to tell me that I don't have water coming from my exhaust. Another side effect is that, with a small amount of water flowing through the exhaust, you tend to get steam coming out of the exhaust, so don't be alarmed at the "white smoke" once you've assured yourself that it quickly disapates and doesn't smell like burning oil.

Strainer

Bob, If you are looking down into the engine compartment, forward of the engine and facing aft, a thru hull with a strainer on top of it should be to your right (or the port side of the boat). Carefully close the thru hull and unscrew the strainer. Clean the screen and reassemble. Open the thru hull carefully. You will have to reprime the raw water pump (follow the hose from the strainer to the engine) there's a bolt on the pump housing you'll need to unscrew while the engine is running until you get a full stream of water out of it. Normal operating temp (I think) is 150 to 180. If you run above this and there still not enough water spitting out the back, you may have to clean and inspect your heat exchanger for a blockage there or at the aqua-lift muffler. Good luck!

5411?

If you feel like getting rid of your engine I'll be in California over Christmas! :) -Alison

5411 overheating

I have a C27, and my 5411, which has a new manifold, and ran cool until mid summer, is now overheating. the water volume never increases, although the thru-hull and strainer are clear. Has anyone had the thermostat go south? Could it be a crippled impeller in the water pump? I am having a mechanic take a look, but the more I know the better, as we all know that unless you have been to diesel school, who knows what the mechanic is saying is the real deal? Thanks
