I would like your thoughts on a mid 80's Bob Perry designed Norseman 44 CC. We have been kicking around an upgrade from our Cascade 42 to Mid 80's 46 or 47 foot Hylas. Our son who is the real sailor suggested we look at the Norseman 44 as another option. We want a Center Cockpit. The boat would be located here in HI Any thoughts on the Norseman craftmanship and the Bob Perry design. Given the choice between Bob Perry Norseman 44, the German Ferr Hylay 46 or the Sparkman & Stevens Haylas 47 which would you choice with all thing being equal with condition and equiment? Thanks Dennis

Sail Before Buy!

Be sure to test-sail the boat. I have seen cc boats that can be dogs to sail, and rely heavily on their engines. Although some do sail good, too!

Norseman 44

Paul I would hope that most folks looking to buy a boat of this caliber would take it for a test sail. Dennis

hmmmm.....

don't think I've ever heard of any of those boats/yachts. Now if you're considering a catalina, beneteau or a hunter.... there might be some folks here with an opinion.

Not that Rare

Joe I would not have thought that the Norseman nor the Hylas were that rare. I know that they are not necessarily considered production boat like the ones you listed but I would have thought given the readership of this forum some folks would be familar with either or both of them Dennis

S&S

I'm probably not the best authority, since I've not sailed any of these boats, but my own boat is in this size range (46') and I've looked examples of all these choices on Yacht World and mentally tried them on for size - I guess my first choice would be the S&S Stevens/Hylas 47 - I'm a sucker for Sparkman and Stephens boats visually. I looked in person at a Norseman 44 aft cockpit and was underwelmed, and the center cockpit version is just not a pretty boat in my eye. By now you have probably figured out that I'm more of a heart person than a head person when it comes to boats.

Thanks for your thoughts

Taylor Thanks for your thoughts. I have always liked center cockpit boats and I do agree that the S&S center cockpit Hylas 47 is a much prettier boat than the Norseman 44 center cockpit. Dennis

Reviews available

I *was* sort of surprised how few responses you have seen. One thing I noticed, though, is that there are a fair number for reviews and references available on these boats, including this one (http://www.boats.com/news-reviews/articledetail.html?lid=7731) of Frers Hylas 46 by Bob Perry. Sample quote: "Aesthetically, center-cockpit boats under 50 feet are a challenge". So true. But you are way ahead of where I was - Loon (my boat) is the first of a very limited production run, and I could find precious little in internet resources about her. Good luck and happy Google-ing.

Sold them

The Norseman 447 whether center cockpit or aft cockpit is an exceptional yacht. These boats are capable of going anywhere and getting there with great performance. I sold them new in the early eighties and sailed them frequently during sea trials and deliveries. If I could afford one I would do it without hesitation. Fantastic choice. Have you looked at the Taswell 43?
