I have a Norcold unit installed in my Hunter 30. It's a small unit and it has stopped cooling the ice box. I think it is out or low on refrigerant/coolant. I was wondering if anyone else has this unit and IF you can recharge the unit. I am not sure if it has fittings so I, or a tech can recharge the unit. From what little I have been able to find online the units are not made very well and don't last long. I hate to spend 700.00-1000.00 for a new unit if all it needs is coolant. Any suggestions? Many thanks to this great board! Morris

Call a refrigeration guy

Just call a refrigeration guy. I had a problem a couple of years ago where the unit was not cooling very well. They topped off the unit for just about $125 (materials, labor & travel).

I must be really dumb...

I've had three Norcold ice box conversion kits and each one failed. I did learn however, that you can buy a tubing tap and refill the r134 with a automotive a/c kit. The special tubing tap and schrader valve assembly I bought at a a/c supply retailer. Total cost about $20. I had to tighten the couplers and that fixed the leak. Good luck.

It is rare that these sealed units ever loose refrigerant. Many of these units are still running after twenty years so you recieved bad advice. Are you sure the compressor is running if not have you tried AC and DC power? If the compressor is running and there is no cooling then the refrigerant tubing and compressor can be removed and exchanged for a rebuilt assembly. If you need advice on this unit check with a local RV repair shop.

Question for Landsend

Do you know for sure that the SCQT-6407 uses R134? If I can find the tap and valve you talk about I will try that route first. Nothing to lose, beats spending $800.00 for a new unit if it is only out of coolant. Thanks for the replys
