Norcold Ice box conversion problems

My 'refrigerator' in my '87 H31 has stopped refrigerating. Actually, it is a Norcold Icebox conversion, AC/DC, attached to my icebox. Has anyone had any luck repairing a system like this? I suspect it's the compressor, but I don't know. You can still hear the thing run, but it doesn't provide any substantial cooling anymore. Any ideas? Thanks, Rick J.

Contact RParts

Rick: Contact RParts and see if they can help you out. I would imagine that a new compressor is probably more expensive than a new system. I think that these guys are located in the bay area. http://www.rparts.com/index.asp

I have..

Nova Kool refridgeration system in my 1984 H31 icebox and it is quite similar to the norcold system. Twice I had the problem of the system trying to cycle on but couldn't. The first time wa after 8 years and the second time was after 7 years. Both times were a failure of the electric control box attached to the compressor area, not the one in the ice box. That could be one of the reasons for your problem. After 19 years, the compressor and coolanr have been fine. Also, this year I had the same problem but solved it by cleaning the wire ends form the battery to the control box as they had become corrode and stopped conducting enough power to run the system. Hope this may be of some help. Mac

Buy New One

I just replaced mine. I think all I had was a freon leak but the cost to install valves and fix the leak on these cheap systems cost almost as much as buying a new one. I bought the exact same unit so installation was easy.

Thanks, everyone

Thanks for giving me a few leads to follow. I'll post the outcome when I get it repaired or replaced. Happy sailing - Rick

Norcold Conversion

I had a Norcold that went south on my 33.6. There is nothing you can do but replace it. I tried to buy the compressor from West Marine with no luck, they would sell the complete unit. They gave me the phone number of the distributor and they told me the same thing. I replaced with a Adler Barbour which is only DC. If I had it to do over I would put in the Norcold so I would not be on batteries at dock. The charger keeps the batteries charged but does add wear and tear. The service man the did the installation said that he once did warranty work for Norcold and they would not even let him recharge but would replace under warranty. Like your's my fan was runing but it was not cooling, I was told it was an internal problem. Good luck, Tony
