For that synthetic line as a backstay, I ended up tying a buntline hitch with half hitches to take up the tails. That knot will never be untied. I took her out into the gulf, and sailed along the coast for a few hours. The wind was coming straight at the shore, so I was able to sail on a reach the whole time out.
I went out with my wife, her dad, step mom, and 2 twenty something sisters. The wind was straight in our face on the way out to the jetties, but a smooth motor ride. The step dad says "I think I would like a sailboat" to the mom.
I put my old jib on, my new one had a tear from the spreader. It turns out it is a 110. I measured the foot of each sail and they were the same. But the 110 has a very high clew. I should have made some other measurements, but it was a pleasant suprise.
I rolled it out about 80% but there were still some gusts that put the rail in the water. Inlaws were a little scared so I had them roll it up and I motored sailed the rest of the way in with just the main. I wanted to reef the main and roll out some headsail, but everyone got sick from helping roll up the jib. I tried to make it fun and let everyone participate. That turned out to be a bad idea. Everyone was fine in the chop and rolling waves until they were looking at something in the cockpit for a few minutes. Then I had a boat full of sick people. It would have been easier to sail by myself, but with the cockpit full of people, I thought it would be best for them to help. Turns out I was the only one having fun at the midpoint of the trip.
Motoring back into the marina, there was a guy standing at the end of a dock waving almost frantically. Then he started doing the macarena, actually it was some kind or boat sign language I guess. As we motor past him he starts running down the dock to meet us at our slip. Before we got there I instructed my father in law how to grab the spring line with the hook. I have done this dozens of times by myself and others on my boat. I guess he underestimated how much force the wind was putting on the boat and how hard he had to hold the line. The boat got blown back out of the slip and we stopped against the pylons. I said it's no big deal we'll just pull the boat in by the pylons and the spring line. The macarena guy starts insulting me by asking who my insurance carrier is. Then he starts asking my slip neighbors about their deductible. After we got the boat in the slip macarena man slips on a bow line, then walks away.
I didn't want to be the typical napolean syndrome short guy in front of my inlaws, so I just said thank you to macarena man instead of throwing him in.
Then the doctor who has a 30' boat two slips down does the exact same manuver as we did. But no one went into crisis mode doing the macarena. I just tossed him a line and pulled him in.
The only saving grace was that my in laws got to see that it could happen to anyone and it's nothing out of the ordinary.
I don't think they will be aboard again except for cocktails at the dock.
It was sandfest this weekend so I included a couple of pics on the beach. I love having a slip at Port Aransas.

I am not sure how far out we were. The water was 30 to 40 feet when I looked at it. I love it where I am now. I had all these plans of cruising to Houston or S. Padre, but we really like being there in Port A. When I get the boat better equiped, I'll go out further into the gulf and try to catch some big fish or dive the oil rigs. I was warned that when the tide is going out it can be hard for a sailboat to get back in, but the wind was blowing straight into the channel. So I knew we would be ok getting in as long as we could get out.

Sounds like you solved the biggest problem of your life, now you no longer have to entertain the inlaws, nice job. What was the guy on the dock all wound up about? Was it because your boat had all that unfinished glass work on deck that you haven't painted yet? As you get to love the sailing you will have a lot less time to do the work. You need to be able to work on the boat while under sail so get a lot of portable equipment and a spare everything to replace the stuff you drop over the side.

speaking of a three hour tour, did you have your Gilligan hat on for the sail?

I never saw the guy before. Maybe since it was windy he knew docking would be more difficult and he wanted to help. Maybe he smelled a boat load of noobs coming, he was downwind. People generally have good intentions especially boaters one toward another. I'm sure in his mind it was all appropriate. My wife says he was just joking around and that I shouldn't take offense. My friends and I are pretty harsh sometimes when joking around I guess that's why she thought it was no big deal. But I don't know this guy.
The next trip down I am going to make that glass work look better. The nets disguise it a little. I like to leave the dinghy on the deck to distract the eye as well. Now that there are people all around me I will have to erect a tent over the parts I am working on. I think I will swing the boom over the ports I am working on and drape and tape plastic painters sheets.

It is good advice to avoid people who are judgemental or have weak constitution untiil you learn to sail better. Less stress all around. My Wife sailed a lot the first year while I was learning, which had its frustrations all around...took the second year off essentially then came back the third year and was amazed at the difference in my abilities and attitude. It just takes enough experience to enable you to think things out effectively in advance.

Yes I am little buddy. lol
The marina installed some new floating docks. I stopped there first and let everyone off, and unloaded the food and beer, which no one touched. Docking there was very easy. My slip is a little harder though.
I have that crappy old main sail I have been repairing. I had a 1' sized L shaped tear I put sail tape on, but it came off. I have some 5200. I am going to use that on it next.(RichH method) But I don't want to quit sailing. I love it! I have about 6 weeks until I get a little money to replace everything that needs it. Main sail, backstay, run the halyards back to the cockpit, finish the lazy jacks and I would like to cut off the lower swaged terminals on the shrouds and install HiMods. I don't know if that will work that way or not. With that much done I would feel comfortable sailing the gulf.
BobM-the only person I really care about sailing with is my wife Jeannette. I will keep putting her through some hard times to toughen her up as long as she is willing to keep doing it with me.

If you want to try sewing a patch I can send you some sail cloth scraps I have from previous projects. A home sewing machine should be able to handle a sail cloth patch if you have one or can borrow one. Maybe your wife knows how to sew and can tackle it for you. Send me a PM with address and I'll throw some in the mail if you wish.
