Nonskid paint problem

Hi all, I have a 1985 Catalina 30. The previous owner repainted the nonskid areas of the deck. I don't know what paint. It looked nice until I gave it my usual Spring cleaning with Star Brite deck cleaner and it ruined it. White streaks everywhere . I imagine I will have to redo the whole thing. Anyone had a similar experience? Are there any paint products that are cleanable. Any info appreciated. Besides being besieged here in Michigan by relentless winter I have too much time to ruminate about these things. At this point looking forward to swatting a mosquito. Thanks. Tom

Tom,

DIY deck Painting can be a pretty labor intensive job to do it right. Like any paint job, it's all in the prep work. Be sure that you're up to the task & comfortable working with two-part paints.

I used a two part epoxy paint called Supermarine. They went public recently. Before that, they supplied their products to the Navy. It's been on my boat for three years now & so far it's bullet-proof. Never use abrasive or strong bleach type cleaners on your deck after painting. Their site has a lot of info. I purchased my paint & etching cleaner online. It was better priced than paints at retail prices.

Looks good Capt, what did you use for your non-slip. Do you have close-up pictures of the non-slip areas.

Caguy,

I didn't take close ups of the non-skid as the grain size is small & I didn't over do the amount mixed. I used what the manuf. suggested per quart. I only mixed enough epoxy & non-skid per the area I was painting. You have to be cognizant of the length of time for the epoxy so it doesn't begin to setup before you apply it to the deck. Did you notice that I changed from the original Catalina pattern on the cabin top & sides. I was going for a unique style.

For the non-skid, I used Behr non-skid floor finish additive. There are a lot of different brands out there that will work. I used Behr's because the grain size was small. I've seen larger size (some just sand) used that when looking at it closely, you could see telltale signs of the sand being knocked off the paint. I've also seen painted decks where too much sand was used.

That being said, each to their own I guess when talking about non-skid materials.
