Non-slip for cabin carpet ?

I'm considering replacing my very old sole carpet with something off the roll at Home D. In the interest of safety I feel it should be non-slip.

What can be used to add non-slip properties?

Thanks

I've used a number of different carpets over the years and it seems to me that the result is always the same - no matter how rugged or robust it is, they break down on the back side. The glue which holds the carpet pile together goes all powdery from saltwater and is a total pain in the *ss to sweep up. I've tried gluing on sheet rubber (as well as those rolls of 'perforated' foam material that we use for dinnerware and such) for non-slip to the back side, but it eventually gives way as the carpet breaks down. I use 3M Spray77 glue. Applied to both surfaces before sticking them together. And don't be shy on how much you use. The limiting factor will be the carpet, rather than the glue.
That said - I don't really see a better option. We need carpet in the PNW, and regardless, I don't think the plain white sole looks at all appealing.
I typically use Home Depot carpet now, rather than more pricey stuff and still get about 5 years out of it.

The PO on my boat screwed down snaps for his carpeting along the edges, and I have always thought to try them out. They certainly look like they'd work!

has anyone thought using boat carpet with the heavy rubber backing on it ...the only thing i worry about is the mosture build up between the back of the carpet and the sole

I haven't seen that product.....but sounds ideal. Haven't ever had moisture problems on the back of mine.

The carpet I have now had some kind of rubber backing. It breaks down as well. At the price of Home D off the roll carpet replacing it every year or two is practical. To tidy up the edges I'm planning on using Instabind. It costs about the same as the carpet ($50 per roll). For non-slip I'm looking at Peraformix Super Grip Spray but not sure how well it will work. And not sure about any down sides.

I just watched a video about simply applying a silicone adhesive to the back. Put it on around the edges and a pattern in the field. flatten out with a putty knife and let it cure overnight. Sounds like it should work.

i'm puzzled. when i first bought then twelve year old boat the carpeting looked new. my paranoia caused me to assume this (probably) catalina factory carpeting can't last and i researched all kinds of replacements. now, ten years later, my carpeting still looks almost new. where is your problem coming from? my cabin stays dry.

That's amazing that yours has lasted so long!
For me - it isn't that the cabin is damp. The salt that we track in on wet shoes, etc gets worked into the carpeting and seems to kill the backing. I could certainly be wrong though.....
How is your carpet backed Mortyd?

I use throw rugs on my cabin floor but need to replace it this year and the backing sticks
to my nice laminate flooring and now it the carpet is sticking to it self as I roll it up for the summer
july and august while away up north.
The backing is shot but the top is still really nice and got them from walmart but they been in the boat since 2008.

sorry, i have no idea how my carpeting is backed but it is almost certainly what came from catalina. i say this because there is no noticable change in the last ten years, the carpeting fits like a glove, and i have the normal amount of 'stuff tracked in.'

I have no idea how old the carpet is in my boat. My guess is at least 20 years. Could be factory original 1984 vintage. It has that look. On the top there are no signs of wear. It's just soiled, dark and ugly. The rubber back has/is crumbling apart. I'm just not sure what problems this may cause with the bilge pump or other mechanical things it may work it's way into.

Polyurethane will last much better and won't transfer silicone onto everything.

(Locktite PL s40 is economical and good for this. There is also a black version. Takes more like 5 days to cure, though.)

that is the best adhesive i have ever used and it thrives on water ...it also so makes the liquid nails products look like you are using peanut butter for glue
