I am restoring an older Catalina 22. All hardware has been removed, and all exterior surfaces are being prepared for painting. What is recommended for finishing the non-skid areas. I have heard that: (1) a mixture of epoxy and polyurethane can be used; (2) a gritty compound can be added to the finish coat; (3) West Marine advertises a "non-skid latex", and this seems that it would work well over the existing surface, but I would like to hear some comments/recommendations from someone who has tried and found a good solution and/or one who can give me a warning NOT to try a particular method. Also can the rub-rail be replaced easily, and should it be puchased from Catalina, or is this a standard "stock" item from a marine supply store? Thanks for your help.

Non skid

Check out the archives for VERY thorough discussion about non skid options. I went with the following method: mask everything, roll on paint to a small (1' x 1') section, sprinkle nonskid material on while paint is wet, move on to next section

C22 nonskid

Johnny, I'm in the same situation. The boat needs paint after 25 years. But what about the nonskid? A friend of my father has replaced his nonskid with a thin rubber sheet material with a nice pattern molded in. I am trying to find his source for this material. Try your local book stores for books by Don Casey on sailboat repairs and refinishes. It talks about the process Ladonna is talking about. If you don't mind I would like to hear from you as to how difficult it was to remove some of the hardware on deck. My e-mail is beeryboats@indy.rr.com Good Luck, Jay
