I have an '84 C-36, and the non-skid surfaces on the deck have faded. When wet they look nice, kind of a beige-gray color. When dry, they look very dull and light gray, almost white. Is there somehting that will bring out the color, and not make them slippery? Thanks, jv

no-skid paint additives

I have several spots with severe wear. It was suggested to me to repaint the no-skid areas. I was told you can us an additive to the paint (I'm using Interlux seattle grey) that will texturize the surface. Does anyone have experience with these products? Thanks, JimC "Dream Chaser"

Paint additives

Hi Jim, I used Seattle Gray too - I just love it! What the guy at West Marine (and that particular guy was actually verrrry knowledgable) said was to get a can of microballoons or similar. Punch holes in the top of the can like a salt shaker - DO NOT mix them in the paint as you have to keep remixing to keep the particulate suspended in the paint. This method worked for me, anway. So tape off the areas you'll paint & work in sections. Roll on a coat of paint in a small section & shake a bunch of non-skid stuff on. Do another section, and on & on. Now sweep off the excess - some say to vacuum but lightly sweeping worked for me. Then apply a second coat of paint over the sand. That'll seal it in & give even coverage. LaDonna

Are youlooking to paint?

jv, It sound like you just want to brighten it up. Have you asked in the gelcoat and plastics care forum? I am sure Island Girl will come back with a response. r.w.landau

Yes, I don't want to paint

(and I thought I DID post this in the gelcoat and plastics care forum!) Anyway, yes, I just want to brighten it up. Whatever the water does to it is what I want the brightener to do. jv

Where's Island Girl?

They usually jump right in so they must not be out of town or something. JV, I wasn't suggesting you paint, I was just answering Jim's question. You should check out Island Girl's products. I have heard nothing but excellent things about them but haven't tried them myself. Sounds like some de-oxidation type product should do the trick. I've used MacGuires but that takes a LOT of elbow grease & I've heard Island Girl's stuff is much easier. Just don't wax your nonskid!! :) LaDonna

ISALND GIRL WAS SLEEPING!

I read the other comments with interest. There is no doubt that paint/grit is a better non-skid surface than the original gelcoat one. However this could be repaired if cracked etc with a little filler and color-matched gelcoat. I am going to put the gritty sort in the cockpit of my own boat. As for making the non-skid look good you may want to provide a mailing address and e-mail address to be a late participant in our great non-skid beta test. Whatever the coating on the gelcoat is (wax- but not for non-skid, acrylic, or our sealant), the most important thing is to remove chalk chemically (use IG cleaners) preserve against further oxidation (IG cleanser conditioners) and prevent yellowing - brighten colors (white, blue, yellow, red etc) use SEA GLOW. Otherwise the coating will eventually lift (like painting over rust). NEW GLASS is just as good an acrylic coating as POLYGLOW and is available through this website's chandlery, there is also an Aurora product called surestep available through Boater's world. Be careful on white gelcoat however since some (all?) acrylics do yellow but this might be alleviated if used over SEA GLOW =treated gelcoat. Our own new non-skid sealant will (when present tests are completed to show superiority) be available in the Spring. It is a single or double-coat spray on sealant that has a non-acrylic resin. So far it is holding well here in Hawaii. By the way, anyone requiring a free IG newsletter on this and other subjects need only supply a current e-mail address. Thanks Jim W
