Has anyone tried using skateboard grip-tape to replace the nonskid on their vessel? My nephew made the suggestion and it sounds pretty reasonable. It's durable, provides excellent grip, and adhears to fiberglass quite well. Whaddayathink?

Test it!

Matt: I think that you would want to test a piece somewhere in the boat. I would think that it would not do well if left in the sun and getting wet day after day either. I would imagine that this is the MOST expensive way to update your non-skid. If you use Gel Coat it would cost you about $45/gal. If you use paint it will run between $20-100/gal depending on the type of paint.

not good

my sons a pro boarder, can you believe that, the stuff wont last that long and judging from the spills ive seen him take when the board gets wet, its not as non skid as you think. ive looked at adding a mat type nonskid to my boat called treadmaster.

I tested this method yesterday. Here's the result

Applied a small piece (3"X9") yesterday morning behind the wench after the weather report called for a heat index of 105 and strong rains in the late afternoon (always makes for good humidity). Checked it this morning and it had kinked on one edge, and curled up on another. I peeled the rest of it off to find a nice goo of sticky junk that is going to be a chore to remove. Think I'll try the paint additives...

Skateboard grip tape

Skateboard grip tape is pretty poor for permanent non-skid. However it is EXCELLENT when you wrap a piece round your spin-on oil filter before installation, so getting it off is not the slippery, bang-the-knuckles, can't-fit-the-tool-in-there hassle it usually. Tried and proven by JC 2
