I'm thinking about painting the non-skid areas on my deck. Can anyone tell me about the best surface preparation prior to painting, suggested paints, and how well the paint will hold up; I'm worried about eventual paint peeling or flacking.

After a great deal of core work & hardware location movement I'm close to a complete deck re-paint obviously including the non-skid sections. Although originally intending to use Brightside or Interdeck with non-skid, I've now been looking at some of the rubberized paints like "Durabak". Anybody have any comments either way? TIA Craig

Rhinohide is a bit softer on the tush.
Durabak is good, but made for heavy industrial use and is not as soft as the Rhinohide that they make specifically for recreational marine use. See their kit # 4 for the perfect solution.

What boat do you have?
ZZ: What boat do you have? Assuming it is a Hunter with the original non-skid, you should look at rollable/paintable gel coat. This is what the decks were originally coated with. It lasts for many years. You apply it with a roller. The wax is in the mixture. If you want to color it, they provide the tint. Some of the options are VERY expensive and I doubt that it will look as good as the original materials and I doubt that the application is any easier.

if house paint works well on top should you use nonskid on the bottom? And if you do, does it help your boat point higher?

Ultra tuff
Check out this link It applies very well using a textured roller, and the rubbery texture works great and looks quite good. I stripped the old paint down to the gel coat, and applied directly the non-skid paint (no primer). Make sure the color of your gel-coat is uniform (re-apply gel-coat on areas where fiberglass is visible) before you put the non-skid, or use a primer if you want a uniform result (at least with the white color). I painted the boat (H22) 2 months ago so I can't tell you how long it will stick, but so far so good. Good luck T-Bob
