Non-CARB Approved Jerry Jugs

After struggling for years with the 'low emission' jerry jugs I may have found a solution. As many of you know, these things spill way more than the old ones ever did. Two I keep on the boat are equipped with the old caps and nozzles which I happened to find in an ancient auto parts store. However, the ones I have at home are various generations of them, most with non-functioning nozzles. I use a funnel, and just pour the contents in. Anyhow, I got a five-gallon can a few months ago with a third-generation nozzle. Used it yesterday on my pontoon boat. It took three of us to handle it. It was impossible for one person to hold the handle and the can on a boat. I went to an auto parts store and complained about the can while looking for a long-neck funnel I could modify. He took me aside and said the off roaders have found 'liquid containers' that most of the specialty stores carry. They are not, of course, marketed or sold as fuel containers but 'everyone knows the drill' . Rick, go to Utah and buy a working fuel jug! I saved my 1969 can and it works. Chuck Hawley bawled about these to CARB when they first came out. Nonsense from the bureaucrats! They spill more than the old ones, but they're too stupid or arrogant to admit they f-ed up. Shameful.

After a half hour of frustration...

trying to keep the flange on the filler spout on one of these "new, improved" yellow jerry cans onto the lip of the tank fill and splashing fuel each time it slipped, I gave up using it.

Went back to the home center where I bought the jerry can and bought a replacement filler spout, cut off the the end of the nozzle back far enough to use it as a regular spout without the shutoff function, and now fill my tank through one of the WM strainer funnels. It's hard to miss pouring fuel into the funnel if careful, and no more spills while trying to get the old "improved" spout to work.

Wow, I'm suprised you guys are not using one of these.

I don't think that's the brand I have, though it looks the exact same. I got mine at lowes, I think it was around $7 or so. My brother then went and got a couple of them because they work so well. The guy at lowes didn't even know they had them, my bro called and I told him where to look (in the plumbing section) and he found them and bought a few. No more spillage, it's easy to use you just put one end in the fuel fill and the other end (with the marble and brass fitting) into the fuel container and start jiggling it to start the syphon.

I have a couple of these because the new fuel containers all spill and are such a PITA to deal with. I use them for the lawnmower, generator, fishing boat, sailboat, etc. Much easier than having to hold and tilt the fuel containers. I've seen them cost A LOT MORE at marine or other specialty store, so best to order online if you don't see them at your lowes/home depot.

I normally don't jump out and call attention to any product like this, but this is a really good thing and reduces the excess fuel that people on boats tend to have leak because of the bad designes of our fuel containers. Like I said, search around, there are probably a couple of brands and don't get suckered into one because its for sale at a marine place and they charge you 4-5 times as much for the exact same thing.

I have to agree with the siphon because after spilling from one of those damn spouts I siphon and it takes less time IMHO

Stu: I'll try that! I looked in Mexico, and they are CARB. I tried friends in New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada. All the same deal. I thought it had spread nationwide. I have friends in Utah. I'll try them next. BUT, I have seven jugs after having disposed or given away a half dozen. I was so mad this morning, I was going to write each CARB member and the Gov. Don't think it will make a difference this time, but maybe the next.

Siphon

The one shown from Lowes probably works fine but I have found the best siphon is to buy a fuel line for a portable tank like you use on a dinghy motor with the squeeze bulb. You use the squeeze bulb to start the siphon so nothing to monkey around with. The hose is heavy duty and the whole thing is made for fuel. Just another option. These are readily available almost anywhere including wally world. In the picture shown just remove the end fitting that go to a specific motor. These hoses are about 17 bucks at walmart.

Years ago I made up a siphon from a bulb, two pieces of plastic tubing and a couple of clamps because my deck fuel fitting is in a slightly awkward place. I much prefer to siphon a jerrycan full of fuel in and have done it dozens of times while underway. I still have two old-skool one-gallon plastic fuel jugs to fill the generator. Those CARB things are typical of a government solution. The only one who likes them is the guy getting rich manufacturing them.

Fuel fill

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones, My fuel fill is under the aft lazzarette seat on my H30. I took one of the yellow 5 gal jugs with the crappy dispensing system and put a 8" piece of clear tubing on it instead of the crappy extension that came with it. I put the tube down the filler hole, and lay the can on the seat. pull the dispensing handle and fuel goes in. I've never spilled a drop. I could see where it would be a PITA depending on where your fuel fill is.

Those White/Clear jerry jugs will work great but you might have to use your Red- Gas or Yellow-Diesel can at the gas station. They are not suppose to let people put fuel in anything other than "Approved" (Properly color coded) containers. Depends on the area you live in.
