Noisy water pump

Has anyone modified their factory installed fresh water pump set-up in an attempt to reduce/eliminate the terribly loud rattle noises? I'm contempting replacing the thin factory installed vibration isolators then acoutically line the floor pan housing around the pump. I'm also considering adding an accumulator tank. Has anyone done this? Any other suggestions would be appreciated - as this noise drives me crazy.

Take a look at the Senor VSD

Mike: Take a look at the Jabsco Sensor VSD pump. They are about $160USD at Campingworld, much more at the Marine outlets. It is a computer controlled unit that does not have all of the bad design problems that the conventional pumps have.

city water

Have you thought of adding city water? This way you will only need the pump when away from dock.Does not solve the pump noise, but could make it less of a issue.

It's not the pump that making the noise...

It's the hull, acting as a resonator. Where the pump is mounted may or may not make a difference...all boat hulls have areas that resonate and areas that don't, but those areas never seem to be in the same places. The simplest, least expensive, solution is, mount the pump on a 1/2" or more of foam rubber (this will require longer mounting screws, btw). Before you screw it down again, try moving it around while a faucet is open to see if you can find a better spot for it.

noise

my daddy always said that for this sort of problem, heavy grease or lard was the best thing.

Use a piece of hose

Screw the pump down to a piece of hose, then screw the hose to the deck. I used a couple of pieces of 3/4 black water hose about 14" long.

Closed cell foam

I put a piece of 1/2 inch closed cell foam between the pump and hull on my 376. It helped alot.

The Silencer - it's the best

I installed the Silencer. It pumps les water per minute but is virtually silent. I tried the VSD pumps......still noisy....mark my words the silencer is great....so quiet, if you leave the water on or have a leak you will not no it is running. only drawback reduced water flow.

I agree with Bobby

I used some 3/4" black water engine hose. Cut two strips aprox 8"long, cut an half circle out of the back in the middle of each, and bolted through the mounting holes on the pump. Then screwed though the top to a stringer to mount to boat. I did the same to my inline engine blower and it made a huge difference to both! Good winter project! Happy sailing, Jay

Grease and Lard ??

Did your daddy also say where he would apply said grease and lard ??

accumulator

An accumulator made a big difference for me. Biggest being that now, you can turn on the faucet just a bit without the thing going into a presto staccato cacaphony. Being able to just crack the faucet goes a long way toward saving water.

Jabsco Sensor VSD

I bought one of these at the Long Beach, CA boat show for $175. I called Hunter and asked about an accumulator tank. I was told that the 410 is designed not to need one?? Anyway, after putting on the new high tech pump, it promptly blew out something and caused a leak into the bilge. I've looked everywhere I can think of to isolate the drip without success. I replaced the new pump with the OEM and returned it for a refund. John Richard s/v Jack's Place
