I have a new Hunter 426DS that's in the process of being set up by my dealer. Last Saturday I spent the day on the boat getting familiarized with the layout of everything and when plugged into shore power I noticed a distinct "buzzing" coming from the inverter. it was fairly loud. Loud enough to be heard throughout the entire cabin. When I asked a couple folks about it, the answer was "they all make some noise...some more so than others." The model is a Heart 2500. Brand new unit in a brand new boat. Anyone have any feedback on this.????

Frank: Your inverter should not make a loud noise! I'm not familiar with your exact inverter, but I've got a Xantrex ProWatt 1750 and can tell you that (at least on mine) you can never, NEVER have both shore power connected and the inverter on...it fries the inverter big time. I know this from personal experience but luckily it was under warranty and they replaced the unit with no questions asked. Check to make sure you didn't have the inverter on. Bottom line is that there is something wrong with your inverter and it needs to be fixed/replaced. Xantrex makes (I believe) the Heart inverters now but if this unit was purchased and installed by the dealer, MAKE THEM FIX IT! and before you take final delivery and give them the final check. At the very least, hold back some amount of money to ensure this and possibly other punch list items are taken care of in a reasonable amount of time. Good luck and congrads on your new boat! Tim, The Xantrax inverter / charger has the
shore power running through it. It senses the shore power and converts automatically from charging to inverting as shore power is turned off or turned on. It is transparent to the equipment in the boat. The Prowatt is an inverter only so it should not be on when there is shore power. As for the noise, I am guessing something is touching something that is not the way it should be. I have had several Heart inverter / chargers and they were all quiet. I would certainly have them fix or replace before taking final possession.

Tim Rich is right in his response to Tim, and Tim's right if you just have an inverter. From the sound of it you have a Freedom Heat Inverter / Charger combination, which has a built in automatic switchover. If that's right, then there should be no noise other than the fan running when you first plug into shorepower, and/or if your batteries are way too low (charging mode). The inverter part only works when you're not connected to shorepower. So you told us when the noise occurs, connected (in charging mode) which means it's not the inverter mode. Have you tried the inverter yet? In any event, a buzz isn't good, the only noise should be a fan (cooling fan for the charger) which should not run all the time. We have a Freedom 15, installed it ourselves in 1998, no noise, everything works. Only "buzz" we get is the charger's interference with the FM radio, not a problem to me. Good luck. Stu
