Cruising World had an interesting article in their January issue on dealing with engine noise. They described some techniques such as multilayered insulation for the engine compartment, some high tech engine mounts, sealing the openings to the engine compartment with gaskets (while still allowing for air intake so the engine can breathe) etc. I was wondering what experience anyone has had with these approaches or others. a noise abatement shield upgrade option containing lead that is supposed to be more effective than their standard material. We have not tried it but you might inquire. Terry

I recently installed sound insulation
inside the engine box on my O'Day 31. I used the kit of 1" insulation from West Marine. It helped, but not as much as I was hoping for. I would do it again though, and plan to add some more in the future.

I used Soundown product- lead/foam
I sound-proofed my genset compartment with 3/4" and 1.5" lead-foam with a foil backing product from Soundown in Massachusetts. It made a dramatic difference. The area I was sound-proofing was a aft stbd lazarette in my 40.5 and since I had the generator with fuel, exhaust, and water lines entering as well as an air supply, I couldn't get a tight and complete job accomplished. However, even with the gaps and openings, the difference was great. We can now carry on a normal conversation in the cockpit sitting on top of the generator, whereas before the noise was obnoxious. Below deck it is reasonably quiet, and if we close the doors to the aft cabin, the generator is just a low throbbing sound. Compared to the 1" leadless-foam that is in my engine compartment from the factory it is a much superior product. I've added the link to Soundown below. It is expensive stuff, but it does work well.
