Catalina 30 Edmonton
My boat is a 1987 Catalina30. I have no water making it to the taps however I do have a working pressure pump. It provides good pressure in the water heater. I am able to undo the draincock at the bottom and good pressure comes out. I managed to remove the RV antifreeze and flowed about 30 gallons of water out there and down into the bilge. I did see a lot of crud come out of the bottom the tank. I don't think this was ever drained before. The boat had spent her life in the pacific northwest prior to moving over the mountains. I doubt the water system was drained to the extent i went to. The plumbing diagram shows there is a check valve between the faucets and the pump. A. can someone tell me where to locate the pump? I can hear it but can't see it. It must be somewhere near the fuel & hot water tanks. b. Where is the check valve located? Is there an easy way to access this valve? On the good side, I found out that prairie sailors are good at rigging boats. I joined a club and found lots of expertise. They have to put it all up and take it apart each year so they get lots of practice. Has to make a better sailor out of me too. I replaced the driveshaft packing following instructions and some tips found on this site. Went easy and the boat is afloat. Still... Thanks. Ken

Faucet screens?

I once had a similar problem and discovered that the screens at the faucet (where the water comes out)were completely clogged. Once cleaned, all was fine. cw

Under the nav seat

I have the same year. Look under the nav seat by way of the 1/4 berth stowage(yep, behind the hatchway ladder), stick your head in and look to starboard and forward. When you turn the system on, will the pump come up to pressure and turn off? If the pump runs constantly you have a leak.(fun...fun...) If there's a check valve its probably right on the pump. Good luck

Had a similar problem.

On our '88 Catalina 30 we had something similar. The water pump (ours anyway) is located under the quarter berth. Take the wooden cover off and you should see it. There is a small check valve near the water heater, the purpose of which is to prevent hot water from flowing "backward" into the cold water line. Ours had somehow become plugged when part of the internal rubber flap got stuffed into the body of the valve. It took a lot of testing to isolate the source of the problem, but was an easy fix to replace the one-way check valve once we did. Regards, Gary Kunkel

Crud in tank

Hi Ken, The check valve should be after a T on the cold side at the water heater inlet. A malfunction should not affect the cold side. I had the same issue on my 30' 87 Catalina. I disconnected the hose and blew back into the storage tank. I suspect a crud obstruction somewhere in the lines. Once I had blown the debris back into the storage tank I flushed the heck out of each of them. I rigged a short siphon hose from the top access port of each tank into the bilge while filling and refilling. A mouthfull of crud water was worth the fix. Then shock the water by filling each tank and adding 8 oz household bleach to each 10 gals of capacity. During the shock run the galley and head fawcets until the bleach reaches them and fills the lines. Let it sit for 3 hours and flush again. Use one half teaspoon bleach for each 5 gals as a regular tretment when you top off the tanks after flushes. good luck.
