No sea water intake

New delivery client this past weekend for a short hop. The manual Jabsco pumped out dry fine but in the wet position wasn't drawing anything in at all. The valve was definitely open. I'd like to give the client some thoughts on diagnosis. My current thought is to close the thru-hull, take off the hose, and open the valve enough to confirm water is getting in. Next hook the hose back up and do the same thing at the toilet to make sure water is getting that far. If both those are positive just rebuild the pump.

Any intermediate ideas?

If the hand pump is hard to press down in the wet position, the inlet is blocked somewhere.. If the pump sorta sloshes up and down, then the little valves in the top need to be cleaned/reseated. That part does not see bowl contents,(they are below the piston) so closing the seacock(s) and opening up that part of the pump is fine. Good luck...

If the boat's been stored with the toilet in the dry mode...

You need to replace the flapper valve at the top of the pump...'cuz leaving it in the dry mode for an extended period puts a "pucker" in it that prevents the pump from priming. And since joker valves in ALL manual toilets should be replaced annually, that should be replaced as just maintenance. But that's ALL I'd spend...I definitely would NOT rebuild a Jabsco toilet pump...the "service kit" costs almost as much as a whole new pump. In fact, before I'd put ANY money into a Jabsco, I'd replace the toilet with one that has a life expectancy of longer than year. Check this out: sbo.com PHII PHC LBA

Not necessarily...a failed wet/dry cam assembly--a VERY common problem in Jabsco toilets made in the last 10 years--can create backpressure that feels just like a blockage.
