I just acquired a 2003 Hunter 386. On a previous boat that I had with a Yanmar diesel it was possible to pull out a knob on the shift/throttle single lever control to increase the RPM for engine warm up. On this boat there is no such provision. Is this normal? Steve

Steve: I assume that you have one of the single handle units with a "neutral" button. Once you get the transmission in the neutral position, you should be able to pull the button out. Some of the units have a button that gets pushed in to do the same thing. They can be a little tricky (like out Hunter Vision 36).

Rather, it has to do with who made your steering pedestal. The one with the silver button is made by Edson. What you probably have is a Lewmar system, which works by pressing the black rubber area at the base of the throttle.

If you have a 386 you should have the Lewmar throttle/shift control. Just bring the lever to the neutral position, push and hold in the black rubber button in the shifter. While holding it in move the lever forward (or back) and you should get throttle only without putting the trany in gear.

Captn Dare, John, Steve & Abe, Thanks for your replies. Unfortunately my control has no black button or anything to push or pull that is why I can't figure it out. I have taken a picture but I do not know how to post it on the message board for all to see. Can somebody tell me how? Steve

The rubber seal (button) in the center of the control lever can come out allowing the metal mushroom to fall out as well. Happened to my H36. Lewmar makes a kit which has these parts. You can obtain them from a US Lewmar distributor.

What kind of throttle shift control do you have?

Mine fell out
Same as with Brian, the black rubber cap fell off mine and the metal butten with a short stem was ready to fall out when I found both. Lucke for me. Take a look at the center where the handle rotates to see if there is a hole for the button to push into.

You have a Lewmar shifter. What appears to be the hub of the shifter, on the lower end of the lever, is actually a "button." Press it. It works.
