No problem, no question, just sailing!

It was hot here in the Bay Area yesterday (as it is today!), and the wind was keeping a low profile. I took the boat out for awhile, thought I might do some anchoring practice or pump up the inflatable and putt around. The surface of the water was banded with wind, so I raised the main, unfurled the jib and went off close hauled for the Bay Bridge. With the autopilot steering, I was free to tweek and haul, moving the jib leads, playing with boom location and doing all that racer stuff. I was alone, so the cockpit looked like a spaghetti factory. After a bit, the speedo said 2.45 knots and with barely a breeze, I felt pretty good. Looking at my watch, it was time to come about, so I decided to sail in towards SFO and then beam reach on home. It was then I really saw the value of fine tuning the rigid vang on the V32. Not on enough, and the boom would move up and down with the swell. Too much, and the main flattened and lost power. Just right, and it was sweet! I have had a question about forestay tension since I got the boat, so while reaching for home, I went forward and sighted up the furling tube. I need more forstay tension! The top 1/3 of the sail sags off, doing nothing. I can only imaging what it's like on the wind!. Oh well. A great afternoon of sailing and another thing added to my list. Not a bad trade off..... (BTW-Sadly, "Running on Empty" is for sale. The job market here in the Bay Area for hi-tech positions is the worst I have seen in 5 years, and we need to turn the magic that is "ROE" back into money. She's in the classifieds if anyone is interested.)
