hi
bad day at the office yesterday i managed to hook the backstay of my beautiful 2002 393 onto a channel marker. To cut a long story short the mast went overboard I'm thankful noone got hurt and we made it back to the marina.
Insurance will take care of it, but my biggest worry is thet the babystay got ripped out tore up the deck a little but put a hole and a small crack in the headliner between the forecabin hatches. How will they be able to repair this? We really love the boat and want to it done properly? Can I insist on a new headliner in the cabin or would they be able to patch and match the pattern?
thanks
Andy on AMALIE Blairgowrie (melbourne) Australia

Sorry to hear about your mast. Is yours French built or US built?

Hi AndyR

Sorry to hear of of the de-masting of your pride and joy Bene 393, however I would like the long story version as all of us can learn from (thing that go wrong) without judgment. I too have experienced bad days in the office "so to speak" so if you feel like enlightening us please do.

As to your repair I hope that Vicsail can help you out with the repair and thank God for boat insurance at times like this, good luck and hope that your feeling the wind on your face soon without the aid of the motor.

the story of the mast going overboard....we were on a charter with 8 passengers. 10 knots of wind motor sailing around 4 knots crossing the main shipping channel. I was distracted by the wash of a large freighter that we just passed astern, tide running out towards this 15m high channel marker I knew it was there having done this trip hundreds of times) i looked at the food on the cockpit table looking as if it was going to slide off.... the pilng dissapeared behind the sail... BANG!! caught the port shroud or the backstay on the top of the pile. The mast started to come down but fortunately hung up on the top of the pile. the boat swung around and hit the pile broadside (bent the toerail), we were stuck. I moved my passengers to the front of the boat for safety got onto the local rescue who came out with some big bolt cutters. Cut the stays the mast unhooked and dropped on the deck breaking in 2. We had to drop the rig overboard, lost headsail furler mast. but worse the babystay ripped a big hole in the drck and damaged the headliner in the forecabin. we motored back to our berth under our own power. will post pics. Lesson learned ATTENTION! ATTENTION :(
