I have a relatively new-to-me O'Day 302 with a Yanmar diesel. When the boat was put in the water last year, the yard noticed a steady drip from the packing nut. They repacked the nut with Teflon packing and since then, there's no drip. No drip when it's sitting in the water. No drip while the engine is running and the prop is turning. No drip at all. Is this OK? Should there be a little drip? Am I slowly grinding down my shaft? This is my first inboard and I just want to make sure I'm not doing something I shouldn't be doing. Thanks to all who reply.

Is it hot?

I put in the Gore GFO packing about 18 months ago and have no dripping and things seem to be fine. Not sure if its the same thing thing as your teflon but my understanding is if the packing nut and surrounding area is not hot after running a while that it is OK. Mine gets just barely warm.

Check with yard

Unless I am wrong most teflon packings are designed to be dripless (PSS dripless for example) Check with the yard that installed it to be sure but you should be ok.

New Goretex Packing

I just had the packing replaced on my Chrysler CY-30. The yard recommended the Goretex material stating there would NOT be any dripping even with the engine running. Richard was correct with his reply about temperature. You should be able to place your hand on the packing nut and keep it there. If it is too hot to keep your hand on it then 'back it off' slightly.

It simply depends on what they put inside

Try this: http://www.c34.org/faq-pages/faq-stuffing-box.html Also, add e-marine's GoreTex to the list of packless material, it replaces the green goop. I still have almost 1/3 left in eight years of use of the green goop, and will use GoreTex next time.
