Yes, it is time to plan an event, and here is the suggestion. As far as I know there has not been a Delaware-River sail-in for owners of my dad's designs, and one would be appropriate since this is his true stomping ground. During the War years his family lived in a riverfront house where the library in Bristol is now located. He built Dusters and Thistles there and sailed them there behind Burlington Island. He worked up the river at the aircraft factory. He experimented with outboard skiffs at Curtin-Hope Marine in Burlington. He raced at Red Dragon, the club where I am now a trustee. And when I was born the family lived in an apartment on the Burlington side, right upriver from my daughters' school. So, THIS is the appropriate area. I am in the very early stages of planning an event and would like to gauge interest, but here is a PRELIMINARY outline of what I'm thinking of: Sail-in, registration, Friday PM. Race, Saturday AM, round buoys and back. PHRF. Prizes/trophies. Judging of boats (done by me and some others), including, best-preserved, nicest-improved, oldest HIN, farthest trip to get here, 'old gray mare' trophy for most 'well-loved' ('abused'). Food, dinner, live music, shellfish, beer with limes and drinks with umbrellas in them. Laughter, stupid jokes, storytelling. POSSIBLY art exhibit of my dad's work (so far not likely, but still possible). Guest visits/addresses by various people. It will sort of serve as a family/boatbuilders' reunion as well. Press. Maybe even be TV coverage (I know people). Other events of entertainment and informational value. Sail-a-thon down to Philadelphia, Sunday AM, 'no-holds barred' race from BBB to the Canal. ALL owners of Raider, Essex, and Hunter production boats will be welcome. Anyone else with one of my dad's boats, let me know if you warrant a 'guest' presence! I am not, at this time, including C-44 and C-48 owners (because they have the ability to steal the show), but I imagine some may be there. This would become an annual event, with the explicit intention of making the crowd at 'Latts and Atts' jealous... just like we are of them. I have in mind a place for this, and some alternates, but will need an idea of interest before picking one and then attempting to get clearances, etc. The ideal time frame would be early- to mid-August. There WILL be a fee to cover mooring permission and some other stuff. It would not be unreachable, however. If there are maybe 40 boats the event will support itself, but reservations will have to happen fast (BY March--?). So if you believe you will REALLY be able to attend-- providing there are available facilities, such as mooring space-- please email me. Comments and suggestions are welcome! COUNT ME IN

I purchasd a 1978 33' Hunter in December 2007 (last month) after looking at a number of boats, reading everything I could, and digesting all posts on this site and Sailnet. I found this design to offer everything I was looking for (and more). She provided me the opportunity to get back on the water with a boat I felt proud to own. Your father designed a timeless beauty. She looked sleek setting on the "hard". The design is well thought out and the placement of what you need is where you need it to be. I have made arrangements to have the boat at Clarks Landing Marina, Delran, NJ when I bring her up from Rock Hall, MD in April. If you want to see how your Father's vision has endured, send me an e-mail (if you get a chance) and we'll sail Dunlook'n together. Steve Wilson US Army, Retired steve.wilson2@va.gov

Cool Idea

John, This is a cool idea. I've admired your dad's designs for some time, and I'm awaiting a survey on an H-30 I've got a deposit on as we speak. If there were a way I could get my boat over the dam at Lake Oologah, I could very well sail all the way there via the McClellan-Kerr down to the Missippi, through "The Gulf"..... Okay enough of that, too much trouble to win the long distance award LOL! However, I could seriously consider flying out for the festivities. I'm a huge fan of your Dad's work, and you have obvious reasons to be proud of him (I'm sure many other personal reasons as well). I'd love to fly out if I knew the dates you were planning for it. I love these boats and the design philosophy which went into them.
