Peggy, Any advise on nitrate treatments? I see West Marine sells a product called "Odorlos" The add says "Odørløs is a nitrate compound that speeds up the natural waste breakdown process and creates odorless nitrogen gas." Will this substitute for a lack of oxygen in a poorly ventilated holding tank?

Odorlos vs. KO

George: Check out the archives on this subject. Peggy has had several posts regarding this exact issue. As I remember her bottom line was that KO requires adequate oxygen where the Odorlos is an excellent substitute when ventilation is not adequate. Our H'31 does not really have a very good vent so I am using Odorlos and it seems to work well.

Odorlos

I used Odorlos last season and it worked well. One problem is that you need to add more Odorlos after about 2 weeks so if you are going to be away from the boat for longer than that, make sure you pump out before you leave. (We always pump just before locking up the boat.)

Odorlos is an excellent product

And often works in systems that aren't well-enough ventilated for K.O. to work. WM's description of HOW it works is way over-simplified and not QUITE accurate (they tend to edit what the mfrs give 'em to fit the space without really understanding it)--the nitrates actually help to release oxygen in the tank contents to create an aerobic condition so the waste can convert to CO2 (which is odorless) instead of coverting to noxious gasses...but the important thing is that, instead using toxic chemicals to kill bacteria (which also prevents solids and paper from breaking down), it works with the naturally occurring bacteria in waste to eliminate odor and break down solids and paper. If K.O. doesn't work for you, try it. If Odorlos doesn't work, NOTHING will until the ventilation in the tank is increased.

KO didn't work in my h34

Re-routed the vent line, increased the diameter - no help. Donated the stuff to a fellow boater and went back to the blue stuff fro Walmart. (inexpensive anyway) Barry
