Does anyone have experience with Nissan or Tohatsu 9.8 HP two stroke outboards? They are considerably lighter than many other brands. Is this good or a sign of cheaper construction? I intend to use it for my 10' RIB. Any info or experience appreciated.

Art: I have had a 2 stroke 15hp Tohatsu for about 4-5 years. Had a problem with starting and running but that was from crap in the fuel and left it over the winter without clearing out the carb. I think that they are as well made as most of the 2 stroke engines on the market. If I were buying a new engine I would not consider a 2 stroke any longer. I think I'd go with a Honda or Yamaha for the 4 stroke engines as my first choice. Tohatsu makes engines for several different mfg. Their parts supply seems to be good too.

Nissan

I had the Nissan 9.8 two stroke with the long shaft on my C22. It was extremely reliable. It never failed to start on the first crank. I bought it new, kept it for about three years until I sold the boat. I would definitely buy another.

I have an 8hp....

Art, I have an '85 Nissan 8 HP on my Hunter '86 25.5 and it is GREAT....I just bought the boat in March 2001, and the previous owner had all of the paperwork with the boat, and he bought the Nissan 8, back in 1988....When I got the boat last year, the boat had sat in the marina for almost a year without any use(divorce sale). After I got the boat I changed the spark plug and changed the gas, and she started right up. I had to move the boat to my marina, 12 miles away, and wouldn't you know it, the fog was so thick you barely could see the bow from the cockpit. My son and I motored for almost two hours at about six knots, to the marina, and the Nissan never skipped a beat. It starts on the second or third pull every time (because it has to suck the fuel in the carb). I run it dry every time I use it. Great little motor. I( am well pleased....Good luck.

Nissan 4 stroke-15hp

The 4-stroke is so smooth and powerful I wouldn't go back. Also 'green' clean and so quiet. 9.9 and 15 are the same weight(same block) so I went big for my 10.5' BoatUS RIB. I have davits and leave it on the dink unless we're expecting some rough weather. It does weigh in at 117 lbs. P.S. The RIB tows well with the engine tilted up if that helps any.

Tohatsu

I have a 30hp, an 8hp and a 3.3hp. Never had any problems with any of them. Get a two stroke while you can. Less weight, less cost, fewer moving parts and longer reliability. The two stroke is designed to perform at wide open throttle all the time. Four strokes are not. I have attended more damage claims on four strokes than two strokes per number of engines produced.

9.8 Experience

I had the 9.8 XL Shaft (25) with Electric Start. It was the nicest outboard I ever had on the back of a sailboat. I think the 25" shaft made a big difference. I used it on a 24 ft boat and never needed to go past half throttle to reach hull speed. It was extremely quiet and seemed to sip gas.

9.8 nissan

I bought my 9.8 nissan new in 1997 It powers my 23 foot sloop with power to spare. I highly recommend it for any sailboat up to 25 feet.

9.9 Tohatsu

My 9.9 Tohatsu, electric start & remote, is excellent. I bought it used 3 1/2 years ago. Plenty of power for my C 27, decent fuel usage. There is a carb kit that will boost the power to 12.5.
