I posted this on the "ask all sailors forum and haven't recieved any responses. maybe some of us "smaller" boat owners are more familiar with this engine.... My Niaasan NS5 5HP kicker (from my H23) was giving me trouble reving-up. It ran at mid throttle only...above or below that it tried to die. I pulled it off and put it in a trashcan full of water, changed the plug, and hosed it with carb cleaner. She started and ran pretty well i thought even in gear, F & R she was twisting up almost acceptably. (its hard to unload the prop in a trash can)....anyhow, i figured i was satisfied so i disconnected the fuel barb to run it dry and just on a whim while it was running without the tank connected i dropped it in F and twisted the grip. Geeezzzz, what a difference, the prop wound to full RPM and and was flinging water out of the can like a 50HP! The can hose and barb are new OMC. This almost sounds like the engine is rich when connected to the tank and as she leans out, (runs out of gas), she comes to life. any insight here? a little extra rev would have been noticable but this thing trippled rpm and was hard to hold down! tia~ william

Nissan troubles

I have one on my 240. Several years ago I had all kinds of trouble. I had been running cheap gas and it caused carbon build up on the valves. The mechanic told me to run nothing but Amoco hi-test. No problems since. And to run the motor dry by disconnecting the gas line. Have you checked to make the vent on the gas tank is open?
