We went to see the Nina in Punta Gorda yesterday, was very impressive but not a trip I would be looking to join. The 7 crew members are all volunteers and some 8 months of sailing but mostly motoring to different ports, they only get three meals a day and lots of work. They began building in 1988 to become the first truly, historically correct replica of a 15th century caravel. It was in Valenca brazil using only hand tools and naturally shaped timbers from the local forest that Nina was built. She will be leaving next week on the first high tide, she is sitting in 5 ft of water at the dock in the photo. Length Overall 93.6 Beam 17.3 Sail Area 1,919 sq.ft Length on Deck 66 ft Draft 7 ft Displacement 100 tons

West coast trip

I was just there today on a nice rainy day, and talked to a very nice young lady. They are going thru the panama canal and up the west coast to vancouver BC for a tallship gathering. I voulenteered to sail with the ship but they have a full crew as of now. I'll just have to keep an eye on their web site and see when a crew opening becomes available. It's amazing that old Chris made it across the Atlantic in such a craft and lousy navigation. you must have paid the $ to go aboard, to get all the information.

$4.00

It was only $4.00 for a senior rate and one of the crew answered all of the questions people were asking. Nick

Great place to go for an afternoon. The best Fried Grouper Sandwich is right next to the Nina @ Harpoon Harry's. Wish I was there right now watching hoops!

Were you surprised

Seadaddler, Were you surprised at how small that thing is, once you step aboard. I don't know what I expected, but the smallness sure surprised me. I would love to make the Gulf crossing with them, but the minimum required time is 30 days for volunteer crew, and the timing just won't work for me now. When I was aboard a couple of weeks ago, they had two openings. Must have filled them since then.

How did we miss it?

I was just at Harpoon Harry's the end of Feb and did not see the Nina. We even walked the dock.
