Attention H33 owners!! I am looking for ideas on a nice way to handle trash on board. For almost 20 years I have been just hanging a plastic bag on the head door and putting trash into that. Works for the most part, but, well, its an eye sore and with a few bottles (empty beers) in it, it makes a lot of noise when the door opens and closes or when we get alot of wake. SO.. Next project... hidden trash container. Right now I am thinking in terms of putting a simple hanger inside the cabinet door just under the sink in the galley, but then again, maybe some of you have already come up with a better solution.. so please offer up any suggestions and photos that have worked for you. Throw it to the fishies?
JUST KIDDING !!! One of my projects for this winter is a trash bin. My plan is to put a tilting door in the side of the sink peninsula. The top of the panel will be just at or slightly below the bottom surface of the sink. I figure I'll cut out a rectangle, put trim around the outside circumference, hinge at the bottom, and probably a wood frame or bin inside to accept a supermarket plastic bag. If I get real lucky it might hold itself both open and closed. If not magnets or latches might help. Currently I just hang a supermarket bag on a couple of cup hooks stuck into the cleat (carptnter talk for a piece of wood you screw into) that holds down the counter top. Not the most elegant solution, but it serves the purpose. On the plus side, I'm not likely to forget to empty it because as it fills up it gets tough to pass by it. I promise if I get the built-in done I'll post pictures within the next three years or so.

Bulkhead mounted bag!
David: I will try to remember to take a picture of the bag that we use on our boat. It accepts a tall 13 gal bag that you use in a household can. There are two eyes where it snaps to the bulkhead. Very effective, keeps trash off the cabin sole.

Saw this on an H37C.
Carl Woods' has a hinged bin on the galley cabinet of his H37C. One of those that only the handle shows, pull out and it hinges from the bottom. Might have been standard on that year. It's about 12" wide, maybe 18" high, not sure how deep. His galley cabinet around the sink is white gelcoat I think. My H37C is wood in the same place and I'm still hanging a bag near the sink. I think your sink sticks out similarly but from the port side instead of starboard. It would be on the end that faces starboard, under the sink.

TRash Bag
I have a blue bag which is plastised on the inside. It hangs from two snaps, the kind with springs in a hole that you press over little male spikes screwed into the cabinet face. I bought this many years ago and have moved it to each new boat. I put a plastic kitchen bag inside it. Works pretty well so I have kept it. I don't know if they are still available but it is a great trash bag. Sturdy and not that ugly.

H37C Container
My H37C has a hinged door under the galley sink. I took a 5 gal spackle bucket, removed the wire handle and drilled the holes out to 3/4". I took a length of line and spliced an eye on each end thru the 3/4" hole. It fits nicely into the cabinet below the galley and I use plastic bags as liners. It also doulbes as a bucket for wash downs and is my back up head.

Manual Trash Compactor
About ten years ago, I found an excellent manual trash compactor at an RV store. It is white with blue trim, and entirely made with non-corroding plastic. It is about the size of a medium sized under-desk trash container. I bungy it on the starboard end of the galley counter, down on the cabin sole. The bungy spring loads the lid, so that it stays closed tight. No smell, and it compacts trash to the extent that I empty it once a week, living aboard, and putting everything in. It roughly halves the walking space between the galley and the starboard berth, but that is a small price to pay. I have always thought that EVERY boat should have one of these trash compactors, and I tried to convince West Marine - it was even made in their colors - but no go. Look in an RV store, and I do think it is available at some sailing outfits.
