Those of you watching my SPOT may be mystified to see a fast, beeline track for Oxford, MD starting Sunday morning and bypassing all sorts of interesting spots in the bay. I've got an unusually good weather report of light winds from the south so I am going to take advantage of it. I have friends in Oxford and am going to use it as a base for exploring the bay.

I haven't spoken face to face in nearly a month with anyone who didn't work for a marina or restaurant so I'm ready for some real conversation. I'm in no hurry to leave the bay so I plan to explore it in short cruises from Oxford and also Solomons where I also have friends and will keep the boat for a while. A break from traveling and a pause to let the weather get a bit warmer seems like a sound plan to me.

I have a June wedding to attend in RI that is being held at a waterfront house with a mooring so I'm not going past that point until after that. I could be in the Chesapeake until as late as mid May. If I get good weather for going around New Jersey, I'm also giving some thought to a trip up the Hudson. My roots and all of my summer childhood memories are very near the head of navigation so it would be a nice trip.

I'm waiting out today's brisk winds at the Hampton Public Piers. I moved into a slip and have got to say that this place wins hands down as the friendliest and most helpful marina I have encountered. The only negative is the horribly designed short finger slips with pilings but that's not the staffs fault. If you come this way often, get in touch with them about their new membership program with reduced rates and a free night for signing up.

A favorable weather window trumps all recommendations. When the conditions become right there is no sense in waiting for the anticipated departure time. Been there in Oxford, cute little town. Tied up in the marina against the seawall in the center of town. Some guy was walking his dog on the grass and let him go without scooping the poop. Not being one to entice an argument over a dog's turd I just let it go but was more disheartened to see that the dog's owner boat sported in the transom a city in Florida as its hailing port.

Other than the Saint Johns and Green Cove Springs, I don't plan to ever go to eastern Florida again unless it is essential to getting somewhere else.
