Hi all

Ref. Newsletter 38. It was finished on my computer and then theard drive
crashed and being a PC professional I did not make a back-up. I still have
the hard drive but so far no luck. I have been quoted over £500 to try and
get the data back but the only thing that was really important was
Newsletter 38 and cant afford that! If anyone has skill in this department
then let me know.

Hello Again,

I am fairly new to the world of Vegas, so I have more than a few questions.
I will try to spare you from too many.

Even though I just purchased a Vega I have been sailing and racing for many,
many years in boats very small and to large. So I know that weight in a boat
is a great detriment to performance. However, I was wondering if any of you
could give some insight, based on your experiences, on how much total weight
a Vega can comfortably carry before ³suffering². I noticed when I relaunched
³Flyaway² that she is floating well above her lines (not surprising since
she is basically empty at this time). I¹ve owned some boats that could
barely carry a crew comfortably and one that even I couldn¹t overload.

My second question is that of a second rudder. I stumbled across a website
about a Vega that a fellow in Holland I believe rebuilt his name is Martin
Oppermans and the boat is ³K. J. Antaba.² I find this most interesting and
wondered if anyone had any thoughts on this retrofit (which is more than I
would probably do anyway, but was sure curious).

Hi Chris

In the One Design Rules the Vega must have her float marks under the
waterline to race. These two floating marks are found on the bow (stem) and
under the transom. Both are on the outside of the hull and consist of a
small stainless steel bolt. There are exact measurements in case somehave
been lost or moved!!

If you add the second "help rudder" you get much better manuvreability and
tacking speed but it is not allowed in One Design Vega Racing. At teh IFR
there is a seperate class for Vegas with with modified hul and/or rudders.
The person that makes and fits the "help rudder" is Arend Schram and he can
be contacted on arend@...

The idealnumber of crew in heavy winds for racing etc is five but obviously
this comes down in the lighter winds.Keep the water marks just under and you
will be ideal.

Does anyone have these exact measurements?

The screws have been removed on my Vega.

Hi Dave

I would check very carefully for these screws. They are usually covered in
layers of paint and antifouling. Run your hand along the stem and under
until you feel a small bump, same at the stern as it is under the stern.

If still not there then I will get the exact measurements for you.

I'm quite sure their gone. On the bow, a previous owner had made a
"firm contact" with the dock, and I had to do some repair. There was no
metal screw in place.
