I'll be sailing to Newport soon and am looking for insight into moorings. All I can find is to hail the harbor master, is this correct?

That's what we did. Hail or cell call, and they will assign you a ball, and tell you how to find it.

That's how to do it. I think moorings in Newport run $40 - $50 a night. The Harbormaster will meet you at an outer navigation mark and bring you right to the correct mooring ball.
Beware of the gulls around there, they're pretty bold! We almost lost our tuna steaks that were on the grill. Great harbor and great town though!
We're headed to the Boat Show in Sept. Unfortunately, I'm in a rental car, not a boat.
