You can anchor at Fort Adams.

Looks like a great time unfortunately we haven't been able to make it there yet because of prior family commitments (weddings, major birthdays) I hope to find the time this year.

There are so many choices it is difficult to recommend any - Fort Adams is, as already indicated, a good choice - immediately adjacent to the concert venue. Ida Lewis YC is close and the rest of Newport is only a 1 mile walk or dinghy ride away.
Stayed last year on a mooring right off of Goat Island that was run by the harbormaster. It was nice and quite. Long, wet, dinghy ride.
Check out marinas.com where you can search for marinas. If you click on one and then view the map you can see all of the marinas in the harbor to choose from. Also gives on-line chart when you zoom in.
Casey of Casey's marina last year was a tremendous help. I had a problem I needed to have looked at and no one else in the harbor could see me for days. Finally a guy from a marine refrigeration company I came across recommended Casey. He had us come over, looked at it in between other projects, fixed us up and wouldn't take any money. 1st class customer service!
We can't wait to go back. Hope this information is helpful.

Marinas in Newport
I used to vacation in Newport Harbor every summer either as a destination or on the way to the islands and back. I always anchored in the designated anchorage area or got a public mooring. The moorings are first come first served (no reservation as far as I know) and they were run by the launch company Oldport Marine. The Treadway hotel had slip space but I never used it. Also Goat Island has slip space but again I never used it. The Newport Yachting Center has some beautiful big boats in the 150 to 250 foot range. But for a price I'm sure they could haul you up on deck and block you up for a couple days :>)
If you got there early in the week and grabbed a mooring then you could stay through the weekend but you will need a dinghy to get over to Fort Adams. You can also catch a public bus from Americas Cup ave. to get to Fort Adams and use the launch service to get into town. The launch might also take you to Fort Adams directly. That way no dinghy. Only trouble with the launch is it costs maybe two bucks per person each way. If you have 4 people that adds up pretty quick if you take a few trips into town each day and night.
Fort Adams is within walking distance of the waterfront but it is a long walk. There is a great scuba site on the west side of fort adams but don't tell anyone about it.

In my earlier post I was referring to the Newport Shipyard I believe relative to the 150 to 250 footers. The Newport Yachting Center is right in the middle of the harbor and should suit you just fine. Only issue there is they can really pack you in making it tough to get out. A lot of large boats will dock on the outer fuel dock but they have lots of dock space. This is where they have the Newport boat shows.
The Newport Shipyard is at the north side of the harbor and they spent a ton of money fixing it up for mega yachts. You can see some really impressive yachts in there. I used to love it when Endeavour was in Newport but last I saw her was many years ago. America II was also there but last time I saw her she was in Key West. Fantastic harbor to just sit and relax and watch all the really neat boats coming and going. Make sure you visit the yacht restoration school while there as well.

I was anchored up one night and when I got up my dinghy was gone. So was everyone else's in the harbor. Some kids after a night at the bars went around the harbor in a kayak or something and very stealthily set everyone's dinghy adrift. These guys were close to Darwin award geniuses. They stole a small Boston Whaler from a large powerboat and took it to the little island near the suspension bridge where they proceeded to set it on fire. Unfortunately for them they didn't bring a second boat along so they were stuck on the island. I was asked to press charges in the morning, but looking through binoculars I spotted my dinghy under Bannisters wharf and the harbor master retrieved it. I always locked my dinghy to the boat at night after that experience.
