I'm thinking about hopping up the coast this Sept after a few days at Catalina. Are there many guest slips in Newport? I know Dana Pt has some, but I never read much about Newport.
Thanks. Bob

Newport has hundreds of moorings available, used to be the best deal afloat at $5 a night. Recent change now makes them $20, they did have a few slips but they were located in front of the CG & Harbor patrol with a pump out on one of the docks. Docks are to be improved but hasn't happened yet, there are 2 anchorages, both can be a little crowded for my tastes. Also a FAIR weather transient anchorage outside in front of Corona Del Mar, 72 hours and you can only leave bboat unattended for 1 hour. This due to large number of boats unattended becoming beach litter. That's the City's offerings, might check with privates if you are going to stay a few days, you can't get to "Back Bay" area remember because of PCH bridge.

You can achor in the anchorage at the south end of Lido Island. Try to get the northwest corner, so no one can drop a hook to windward. Very nice there, but can get crowded on holiday weekends. You'll need a dink to get ashore.

You can also check with the Harbor Masters at the different marinas and some of them short rent slips when they have tenants out for extended trips. Good hunting.

Where are you staying on Catalina. Some of our fondest cruising days were spent there. Used to go every year for a week at a time. If you can get a mooring can in Avalon do so. don't miss the tour of the Casino and the Wrigley botanical garden. We used to sail out of Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro, spend a few days in Avalon then move up to Emerald Bay and then a reach to Marina Del Rey. We also used to harbor hop south from Santa Barbara to Ventura taking the channel island to port to Paradise Cove to Marina Del Rey to San Pedro to Dana Point and then to San Diego. Alas, Now I'm a desert rat:eek: Fair Winds and Full Sails...

Another Option...

...I assume you are not a YC member. But, if you are, there are many to choose from and they will work with you. However, if you are not a club member, moorings in Newport are the way to go. You could try the Balboa Bay Club. They may rent to a non-YC member. Another option, and relatively close to Catalina is Long Beach. That would be the downtown (Shoreline) marina, since Alamitos will not have guest slips for the next few years owning to a rebuild. Another is Cabrillo in San Pedro, King Harbor in Redondo Beach and Marina del Rey. All of those should have slip availability. Have fun!
