Renken
I was looking for an open 16 footer to introduce my daughters to sailing when I ran across a Renken 18 for sale - it had been donated to a church. It taught me a lot in the 6 years I owned it, and though it was a long way from a state-of-the-art design, it suited my needs at the time. A very safe and stable sailer, its rig is simple and easy to set up - which also means that it doesn't have the tweaks that a more performance oriented boat would have. It was originally built as a "Tangerine 18" in the late 70s, then Renken bought the mold(s) and made them in '83, only to stop production because they cost too much to build. I did about 400 sails on mine and sold it for almost what I had in it, after pushing it as far as I could (rigged it for spinnaker, etc.) Because it has a stub keel it will make a goodly amount of leeway upwind, and thus is not much good for racing, but if you don't mind that drawback it is a fine boat, well built and simple. I would be happy to comment further backchannel. Check out geocities.com/renkensailboats/ for more info.
