Newbie on a budget needs battery for Yanmar 1GM10.

Below site recommends 385 CCA and 455 MCA.

Below is a $62 battery from Walmart with 625 cranking amps - that should be more than enough for 50+ degree use, right ?

I don't want to get in a "brand debate" please - I'm just trying to understand the sizing I need to operate with confidence. Thanks !!!

I believe you are talking about starting batteries. They are usually rated in cold crancking amps. Such batteries are adequate for a powerboat with a constant running engine. You will find that on a sailboat you will continue to have power needs even after you shut the engine off and make way under sail. The type of battery best suited for this use is a deep cycle battery. Fortunately the small auxiliary diesels we deal with can be adequately started by deep cycle batteries so we can use them for dual purpose (starting/ house battery). You can do with a single battery but if you allow it to discharge to deeply there might not be enough charge to start the engine. For that reason the usual setup for a budget installation uses two batteries having one to provide house power and the other kept in reserve to back up the first and have power to start the engine. The most economical setup is two group 27 deep cycle wet cell batteries. Walmart batteries are usually fresh and offer good value for the price. It is adivisable to connect the batteries through a battery switch which offers the capability of connecting Batt 1,Batt 2, Both or Off. It is important such switch be (make before break connection) to protect the alternator diodes. Sizing battery banks for a boat requires some knowledge so I would recommend you do your homework and read up on the subject. While you get yourself up to speed you may purchase a single deep discharge battery so you can putter around.
