Hi all, I just recently got an 86 Hunter 23 and have had her out in the intercoastal once so far. We did fairly well considering our limited experience. I have a couple questions though. When we put the main sail clips in the slot in the mast they have a tendency to slide right back out unless we actually raise the main. Is there supposed to be something else there to prevent them falling out? My other question is about trailering. I have seen some posts in the archives about trailer extensions and since I have to back the truck's back wheels back to the waterline I was wondering what the current concensus is. Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Jeremy, it sounds like you are missing a sail track "slug". It's a metal piece that fits into the track and tightens down with a knob or a wingnut. Should be available at a sail loft or from a marine supply store. As far as a trailer extension goes, if you don't have one built into your trailer, it would be pretty hard to add one.

Trailer ext

I have a pin to insert through the track just above the slot for my main, keeping the sliders from backing out until I'm ready. My other boat has an aftermarket slug with a tensioner knob. Both do the job. For the extension you could buy one or fabricate one like this. http://www.customsailboattrailers.com/customsailboatrailers3.html Good luck, Michael

Cotterless detente pin

In addition to the sail stop (highly recommended), I'd recommend a cotterless detente pin right underneath the sail stop to prevent it from popping out when you are reefed and pulling down hard on on the sail slugs. You only have to lose one to know what I mean....

Been using this type of pin

With the 240 I had added my cotterless pin by drilling the small hole above the sail slot. Hadn't thought of the issue of a slug with a tension knob(or a pin) being under pressure when reefed. It seems that the sail slugs shouldn't bind on the stopper unless you leave one too many slugs in the slot when reefing the main which would then be nearly impossible to downhaul. I just keep my pin with a short safety lead attached to the boom at the mast for quick use and no fear of being dropped overboard. Sorry if i'm clear as mud. good link on the pin. Boaters world was where I found mine. Aloha, Michael and Kelli
